Year 7 roadshow

World of Maths Incursion

On Friday, 3 December, the Year 7 Mathematics students participated in the “World of Maths Roadshow” presentation, conducted by Mr Jack Murray.

Mr Murray begun the presentation by asking students how they use Math in everyday life and how Math can be useful for their future career.

The Incursion consisted of a series of mathematical games and puzzles, all “hands-on” activities without any technological devices; a refreshing change and a unique experience for our students. They moved from activity to activity in groups, working together to solve the 25 different mathematical problems, ‘equipped’ with their curiosity and enthusiasm, all in a fun atmosphere.

Here are some of their comments:

“It was an interesting and fun event with most games played as a team, so everyone was involved, and no one excluded. One of my favourite games was building a bridge so Peter could get across to feed his koalas in the sanctuary”.                                            Melvin Sayula

“I had an amazing experience. The challenges were hard, but still fun. Our favourite activity was the Post Box because we used an algebraic formula to find Alison’s post box”.

                                                                                                                                          Catherine Gabriel

“The Incursion got everyone to put their thinking caps on to figure out the solutions. We had fun working together as a team and extended our thinking to solve the difficult puzzles. Thanks to Jack who took the time to entertain us and teach us”.

Charlize Field & Tahlia Cook

“The Incursion was a fun, interactive experience that inspired many thoughts and ideas. There were many challenges, but my favourite was ‘Rebound’. It encouraged creative thinking because we had to visualise each shape. Overall, it was an exciting event to attend.                                                                                                                          Pratishtha Mayank

“It was definitely an experience to remember. It made me exercise my brain and helped me work with others. The incursion gave me an understanding of how to practise Math in my everyday life. I was glad to be part of the experience”.                                      Azeriah Borja

Special thanks to all teachers involved in the supervision of students during the sessions.
