Car Wash - Backpack Beds for Homeless

All boarders are encouraged to be a contributing member of society by being involved in community service and giving to others. Recently, we learned about an organisation called Backpack Beds for Homeless Australia. This organisation is a charity who help by providing lifesaving backpack beds to street sleeping homeless people. A backpack bed provides shelter and dignity. The Anchorage boarders worked together washing cars to raise some money to donate to this charity. They also had a cuppa and a cake for those who were waiting patiently for their car to be squeaky clean.  Fortunately, the weather was warm when we had the car wash, because the boys got soap and water everywhere! They had lots of fun while knowing they were able to help out people in need.

Year Seven Reflections

When I first started in Term One, I thought it was really different from my previous school of Mount Barker Community College. Things had different names such as gym for rec centre, prep time for homework. The uniform policy is a lot more strict than what I was used to. I had to wear a tie and a blazer for the first time. Bedtime was earlier and at the same time every night. A different bunch of people to hang out with after school. I liked being able to play different sport and participate in different clubs. I have learned how to get along with lots of different people. I now value the time that I do spend with my family and try to make the most of it. My favourite memory is of times spent in the gym.

My first impression of coming to Albany from Broome, was how cold it is here. It was a long way from my family and anybody I knew. However, I adapted very quickly, making friends and trying new activities in boarding and school. I really enjoyed going to the movies, playing soccer, and having waffles for breakfast on Saturday mornings. I take most things in my stride and I have become good at navigating my way through airports to and from school for the holidays. My favourite time was when we were flooded and the boarding house was without power and water overnight. It was an adventure!

At the start of the year, I was feeling nervous about coming to boarding school. I was lucky that I knew most of the boarders in my year through football. I also had my brother in Year Nine here. One the best activities I have tried is surfing at Denmark. I have been involved in basketball and football. Ten pin bowling with my mates has been fun. Bacon and eggs on Sundays or waffles on Saturday are pretty good. It’s been a good year. I have made new friends and learned to do things for myself such as getting organised and doing my washing.

Boarding was like a rollercoaster. At the start I was nervous and shy. Now I am confident because of my experiences this year. Some of those experiences have included going to the beach where I could get to know other boarders while having fun.

Woodwork

Thank you to Mr Peter Colgate who completed woodwork with Year Eight boys this term to make two shoe drying racks for use in Anchorage. The boys involved and I appreciate that Mr Colgate spent time after school on a Wednesday to work with this group.

Anchorage Upgrade Progress

The vacated west wing and the dining room area have been a hive of activity. The walls in both areas are looking fresh and clean with a new coat of paint. The tiles in the dining room have been removed in readiness for new flooring. The boys have been patient and flexible with the disruption to the House. The entry lounge and the office are next in line to be painted. We are looking forward to greeting families in the 2022 with a lighter, brighter boarding house.

Sunday Fun Day

On Sunday of Week Seven, we celebrated the end of the year by having a fun afternoon at Eyre Park.  The boarders played basketball with Mr Nelson Stanborough and then we had fish and chips for dinner.  On the way home, we treated ourselves to an ice cream.

It has been a wonderful experience to get to know and grow with a fantastic group of boys.  I am excited about next year and welcoming new boarders in to Anchorage House.

I wish all boarding families a Merry Christmas and a refreshing holiday break.
