FILM COMPETITION

The Annual 3in6 Film Competition Swings into Kew

The annual 3in6 film competition landed in Kew on Thursday 28 August. Approximately 60 students from all year levels signed up for the day to try and make a 3 minute film in 6 hours. Dr Karen Lynch was a guest judge in this year’s competition and she came up with the two clues – the phrase “I’m walkin’ here…” (taken from the film Midnight Cowboy) and the object: “a key”. The students could make any film they liked as long as the two clues were embedded in the film.

Students organised themselves into groups and were eager to find out what the clues were. Once, the rules of the competition were explained, the clues were revealed and students began to move straight into pre-production mode. By the end of the day, 17 films were submitted with one cheeky ‘unofficial’ entry from year 12 student Gyles Whytecross.

The judges had a difficult choice to make. The films ranged across the genres of documentary, mockumentary, drama, absurd, comedy and even music video! After much discussion, the judges:  Dr Karen Lynch, Mr  Huu Tran,  Mr Frank Ferretti and Mr Danny Gesundheit, decided to award winners across the year levels. The senior school winners were Olivia McDonald, Emma Neumann and Mahalia Kluwer for their Breakfast Club inspired film. Two groups came equal first for the middle school. They were: Bea Hennessy, Grace Gallagher and Maddy Lammiman for their cute music video inspiring people to dance, and Maddy Morely, Nisha Naidu, Eleni Babusku, Melanie Tzimas and Emily Kokkinis on their lost key book. A year 9 group were given a special runner up award for their spy-inspired film. They were Callum Ryan, Samuel Edvardsson, Matt Kaal and Alex Constantinidis. Finally, junior school prize for their efforts in making a film went to: Rebecca Joseph, Rebecca Anthony, Louise Lorenzi, Dior Meaney-Liu and Sri Vasuthaven.

This year, the screening of the films and the awards presentation occurred in the library on Monday 15 September. It was a great atmosphere in the library and if choc tops were made available, then perhaps everybody in the school would have come. Next year will be even bigger and better.
