A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A UNIVERSITY STUDENT

 A Great Experience

On November 11 2014, students from Kew High School, Auburn High School and Ashwood College went to Swinburne University, Hawthorn campus, to participate in a program called: A Day in the Life of a University Student.

The Kew High students split into two groups, which rotated through four workshops designed to give a taste of life at uni - a treasure hunt, careers workshop, Life at Uni question and answer session, and an academic skills workshop. At the end of the day, we all went to two lectures - one about Indigenous Affairs and a closing session about specific courses at Swinburne.

The treasure hunt required us to go round the Hawthorn campus and try to locate different buildings and landmarks. In this activity we could freely move around the campus and see the different facilities Swinburne had to offer. It enabled us to experience what part of university life is composed of - looking around campus trying to find your classes. One of the main campus locations that stood out to us was the grassy area and pond, surrounded by little stores selling foods and other items Swinburne students might need. This workshop was beneficial because we could see the environment we would be immersed in if we choose to study at Swinburne.

Another workshop we enjoyed was the Life at Uni question and answer session. We were able to ask a panel of current university students questions about all the aspects of university life - social, study, and anything else we could think of. This taught us a lot about what uni is really like, because the students from Swinburne shared their personal experiences and gave us advice.

The day was a great experience for all involved and helped show us some of the options available when we finish high school. Thanks to all the different workshops, everyone walked away learning at least one new thing about university and with a better understanding of life as a university student.

Thank you to Ms Tsaveas for organizing the day, and to Mr Lucca and Mr Abbot for accompanying us.

This program was funded by Foundation Boroondara.
