EXCITING STEM NEWS for 2022

Fitzroy Primary is excited to share the news of a successful Yarra City Council biodiversity grant submission for a 2022 STEM project on our local microbats. Did you know that there are at least 9 different types of native microbat residing in Melbourne including the Lesser long- eared bat and the Gould’s wattled bat ?

Microbats are generally very small bats such as the Chocolate Wattle Bat in the photo which has a wingspan of only 4 cm !!!!

The Urban Microbat Project will give students the opportunity to construct microbat boxes to be placed high in our schoolyard eucalyptus. Students will access technology to observe, record and research microbats’ using cameras placed in the boxes which connect wirelessly to computers. Students will also be learning about these tiny species of bats as part of their Biological Science unit and research bat populations in Melbourne engaging in an education partnership with Yarra City Council.

We can’t wait to go batty !!!
