Information about the Unique Student Identifying (USI) from VTAC
The Australian Government is extending the Unique Student Identifier (USI) to higher education students, starting in 2021.
What is the USI? The USI is a student's lifelong education number.
When do students need a USI? From 1 January 2021, new higher education students will need a USI in order to be eligible for Commonwealth assistance (Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and/or HELP loan). It will be a mandatory field on the electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF) for new students and was needed by students when creating a VTAC account. By 2023, all higher education students will need to have a USI if they expect to receive their award in 2023 or beyond. This includes all students who started before 2021, and all onshore international students.
What do students need to do? Students who are commencing study in 2022 should:
- check if they already have a USI (from previous vocational education or training)
- get a USI as soon as possible;
- provide their USI to their Tertiary Admissions Centre or Higher Education Provider when requested.

Students applying for Private colleges (in VTAC these are associated with codes that end in a ‘2’) and TAFE institutes (in VTAC these are associated with codes that end in a ‘4’), while VTAC manage some, there are some where you will need to apply directly to some institutes. In this instance, each relevant private college and TAFE will set their own application dates, so it is worth checking the institution webpage for details relating to key dates and application process.

Year 9 and 10 Students – University Early Admission Programs
Did you know that at some universities, you can apply for programs that enable you to receive an offer before your final Year 12 results are released?
These are called ‘early admission’ programs and they provide a way for universities to take into consideration factors other than just your ATAR for admission into courses.
Some universities take into consideration your Year 11 results for university entry. This is very important to know for students starting Year 11 or advancing into Year 11 subjects.
Students with a successful early entry application may receive a ‘conditional’ or ‘unconditional offer’.
Conditional offer: Means that you will need to meet additional criteria to receive an offer (e.g., a minimum ATAR).
Unconditional offer: Means as long as you complete Year 12 and achieve the course prerequisites, you will receive an offer (the ATAR will not be taken into consideration).
The following are examples of Universities that take into consideration Year 11 results:
Australian Catholic University
ACU Guarantee
Charles Sturt University
Charles Sturt Advantage
University of Wollongong
Early Admission
Australia National University
Direct entry
Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS)
This is an umbrella program that covers 14 institutes in NSW and Canberra.
