YEAR 12 CAMP

A Warm Welcome

As a year 12 student, it’s quite strange to realise that you’re entering your final schooling year, knowing all the challenges that are ahead in what’s considered by many to be the most important twelve months of your life. You know you’re going to need all the help that you can get and that is precisely what the two day Year 12 Study Camp provided. Not only was it informative, but also motivational, from Khoa Do’s emphatic introduction to Arthur Bolkas’ captivating conclusion. Khoa was simply inspirational, outlining the difficulties of his childhood before laying out his highly noteworthy achievements. Arthur delivered an up-front speech on how exceptional grades don’t necessarily lead to success, emphasising the adage that, "You are not your ATAR score...", as he told his own personal tale of how he was led down the wrong path.

As one who is participating in both the English and Literature courses, it was delightful to see that we were almost always able to

participate equally in each subject rather than having to prioritise, as in previous years. Over the two days, students were always busy, rapidly moving between lectures, always actively learning and taking notes from each presenter regardless of the subject – from learning about the 1950s in Brooklyn with Anna Corney to learning how language creates meaning with Siegrist Peel.

Students were also given an insight in to their subject requirements through listening to presentations on Using Language to Persuade by John Kilner and on the topic of Conflict by Ross Huggard.

During the camp, we were able to wear comfortable casual clothes and Year 12 coordinators treated us to a delightful morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on both days of the study camp, truly providing us with a warm welcome to our final year at Kew High.
