Marine Studies Biology Camp

Unit 2 Biology students recently participated in an overnight camp at Queenscliff to study Marine related concepts with the Department of Primary Industries.

Students participated in a variety of different education sessions to learn about the plants and animals that inhabit the local coast and marine environment. Marine Discovery Centre staff took students through a diverse range of habitats including scrambling across the rocky shores at Barwon Heads, walking through the mudflats at Swan Bay and snorkelling around Pope’s Eye, Queenscliff.

With magnificent weather, students worked extremely well in all sessions, asked appropriate questions and were interested to learn about strategies about how to protect our marine environments.

Analytical Chemistry Workshop

Unit 3 Chemistry students participated in a three hour laboratory program at the University of Melbourne on Friday 14 February. Entering the Chemistry Lab, students worked with Masters and PhD students to perform a chemical analysis on one of the various analytical instruments available at Melbourne University - High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy.

Throughout the session, students determined caffeine content of a soft drink, the alcohol content of wine, the iron content of a common supplement and the amount of sodium in a sports drink. This workshop was a great opportunity and assisted students with the  theory associated with Unit 3 Chemistry. It helped them understand how these high performing instruments work, in a challenging and professional environment.
