Student Services : Careers

We made it!!  In our final newsletter for the year I would like to leave you with some thoughts on the importance of career conversations and education for our young people.

Best of luck to the Class of 2021, who will be receiving their results late next week. I will be available to students for change of preference and offer support over December and January.

Looking forward to seeing you all again in 2022 😊

Talking and exploring careers over summer

Career education can often start with career conversations. Families play a major role in contributing to how young people think about their future working life, and parents have an important part to play in broadening the career horizons for their children.

The career journey that our children take is very unlikely to be a linear one. People and environments are ever-changing, and unpredictability has become the new normal. Stepping forward into a singular career outcome/goal, without other ideas and contingencies, is setting oneself up for disappointment or perceived failure. We need to broaden the horizons and aspirations of our young people to help them prepare to navigate their future.

The Australian Job Outlook website currently lists over 12,000 different careers!  I wonder if you can name even 100 of these? I certainly struggle, and at a conference I attended last week a presenter from Canada estimated that there are 45,000 different jobs worldwide!

Career education and conversations are not about defining a singular purpose, but about exploring opportunities. Building awareness of the myriad of career roles, existing and emerging, will provide a greater awareness of the world. Avoid stereotyping and encourage your child to think about their own strengths and values and how these fit in with career opportunities. myfuture is another great resource.

Students who understand the complexity of the working world and the opportunities that exist are more likely to find employment. Furthermore, those who understand themselves well will develop the self-efficacy to find work that aligns with their value system. The more clarity that young people have about themselves and their world, the more likely they are to see and create fitting opportunities as they navigate their way forward.

I encourage everyone to take time over summer to build awareness and aspirations by exploring careers and having career conversations.
