Principal's Report

Welcome

It is with great pleasure that I make this contribution to the final College newsletter for 2021 in what has been a truly, unusual year.  Never would I have thought we would be sanitising, social distancing and wearing masks at school, locked in our homes and subject to curfew again.  Our school by its design is a place of collaboration, sharing and engagement, fortunately we are also a community that embraces challenge and change.  Our collective efficacy in dealing with this virus has seen most restrictions lifted and I am sure we are all looking forward to Christmas and New Year with family and friends.

Freshstart

Our well established Freshstart Program sees eligible students promoted to the next year level at the conclusion of the formal examination period. It is a very productive time, and a fantastic opportunity for students to put forward their best efforts in all of their 2022 classes. Welcome to the 41 new families who have joined our learning community for this program.

The transition to a new school and the commencement of secondary school can be anxious times for young people and their parents. Year 7 2022 families attended a transition evening on Tuesday 30th November. This year’s guest speaker, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, is a well-known psychologist and communications specialist. Michael has broad experience in working with adolescents and families and is now a regular speaker at Dromana College events.

School Leaders for 2022

I have the great honour in announcing the College leadership for 2022. This year we had the opportunity to meet with all our senior students who put their names forward as College leaders via individual video presentations.  Each of these nominees for College Captain were truly worthy of the

position and I would like to publicly commend their courage and commitment in standing for election.  We should all be very proud of these young people, they are a great credit to themselves and their families. They will be fantastic ambassadors for Dromana College.

The four School Captains for 2022 are:

Kyneisha Czowhan

Krystabel Forward

Melody Johnson

Francesca Montgomery

Orientation Day

I was privileged to welcome our new Year 7 students on Tuesday 7th December for their orientation day at the college.  The students had the opportunity to meet their new classmates, their teachers and familiarise themselves with the school.  Our new students made every effort to put their best foot forward and I am looking forward to their learning journey continuing with us in 2022.

Valedictory

It is always with mixed emotions that we farewell a Year 12 cohort.  Sad that their time with us has concluded, proud of the wonderful young people they have become and excited for their futures.

We hope their time at Dromana College has been special. The last two years have thrown more challenges than anyone could have ever imagined at our our class of 2021. Their resilience, positivity, kindness and sense of purpose held all our learning community together and produced a magnificent end of year atmosphere across the school. They were an amazing cohort who lived our  values of respect, responsibility, integrity and personal best.  We wish them well in their future pathway’s, we thank them for the memories and friendships, and trust that they will return to let us know of their  achievements.

Lastly, I personally want to thank our whole college community for their support across 2021 and wish all of our students, staff and families a wonderful summer break.
