The year so far
This year, we welcomed 29 new students into year 7, as well as a selection of students across year's 8, 9 and 10. Our senior students gave a strong account of themselves in the School Sports Victoria Premier League Cup competition, with our boys losing on penalties in the semi-finals after a 1-1 draw in extra time.
Our young girls squad produced some great moments in the group stage, including a 2-2 draw with eventual winners Rowville and we look forward to their progress and development ahead of the 2022 edition of this annual tournament. To put things in context, we are the only non-select entry program in the competition, meaning that we work with and develop our talented players from year 7 with the hope that when they reach year 11 and 12, they will be able to compete with schools that can recruit players annually.
We also saw progress in our Bill Turner Cup competition for our 2006-born (and younger) boys. A comfortable win over Overnewton was followed by a magnificent display against Taylors Lakes in the final and we now await the winner of Rowville vs John Fawkner College for a chance to face Maribyrnong in the Victorian final.
In our local Keilor division competitions, our year 8 boys and our year 9/10 girls progressed to the Western Metropolitan finals to be played later this year, and our year 7 boys, year 8 girls and year 9 and 10 boys all lost in the final of their competitions to our local rivals, Taylors Lakes.
As much as our students love the feeling of winning, we accept that a result in a match does not define or determine their progress as people and players. Soccer by its very nature is a low scoring sport, where luck can play a much bigger factor than in any other team sport that has a higher scoring ratio per match. We have seen this throughout the history of the game at the highest level, with the average English Premier League match having more than 150 turnovers of possession as a result of forced and unforced mistakes.
