CSSA South Coast Zone Cross Country Carnival

On Monday 3 May, 24 of our Secondary NCS students travelled to Willandra Cross Country course to compete in the first ever CSSA South Coast Zone Cross Country Carnival. Due to COVID-19 restrictions to progress through to State, students needed to qualify through a Zone Cross Country Carnival. Well done to our students on their participation in what was a great day. Special congratulations to Zechariah, Emily, Joel, Claire and Hamish who won their respective age groups and also to Caitlin who also placed in the top 3 in her race.

22 of our students finished in the top 15, qualifying to compete at the CSSA State Cross Country event, which will take place in Sydney on May 28. We wish all the students attending this event the very best and encourage them to keep up their running and fitness!

A big thank you to our wonderful Year 10 students and parent/carer helpers (Mrs Harlor & Mrs McLaren) for their assistance with various jobs on the day.

Primary Zone Cross Country Carnival

Monday, 3 May 2021 was the inaugural South Coast Zone Cross Country carnival. It was held locally at Willandra, Brown's Mountain, near North Nowra. Blue skies, bright sunshine and light winds greeted NCS's 29 primary students from Years 3-6 as they arrived.

The day began with students, teachers and some parents walking the course's many hills, troughs and flat sections together. The day's first events were 8-9 year old girls and boys 2 km races. NCS 'began with a bang' winning both races. Sienna S and Flynn S both ran excellent races to win gold medals for their impressive finishes. Flynn recorded a time of 9:21:54 and Sienna made it home in 10:21:64.Mitchell P carried on the earlier podium finishes securing overall third place in his 10 years boys race, earning himself a bronze medal in a time of 9:16:06, only less than 40 seconds behind the winner. Elsie P went one better winning second place silver by finishing her 3 km 11 years girls race in 15:10:86, a personal best for her over this distance. As students, teachers, parents and caregivers from NCS cheered on our cohort, we were all so proud of everyone's efforts on what is a very challenging course (even harder than the State and CIS courses!). Great job boys and girls.

Twenty students, ten boys and ten girls, from NCS's Primary Department managed to finish in the top fifteen places for their age group races. Therefore they all qualify for the CSSA State Cross Country Carnival being held in Western Sydney on Friday of Week 6 this term. Well done to those students. We look forward to hearing more about your progress there.

Olympics Unleashed

Former Winter Olympian Alex Almoukov visited NCS sharing with our Year 7-10 students as part of the Olympics Unleashed program, presented by Optus.

The Olympics Unleashed session saw Alex inspire students to find and follow their passion and provided lessons in goal setting, overcoming challenges and developing resilience. Alex drew on his Olympic journey and how he overcame challenges to compete in his sport of biathlon (winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting). Alex is the most successful Australian biathlete! Alex inspired our students to be the best they can be – whether that’s in school, at home, on the sporting field or with friends.

Thanks for visiting Alex and sharing your story with us! @AUSOlympicTeam@nswinstituteofsport#OlympicsUnleashed

CIS Secondary Swimming Championships

A huge congratulations to Ollie E (Year 10) who represented NCS & NSW CSSA at the CIS Secondary Swimming Championships recently. Ollie was asked to share about his experience:

'On the last Monday and Tuesday of April, I travelled up to Homebush to compete at the Combined Independent Schools Secondary Swimming Championships. The championships consisted of a night session on Monday from 6-9:30pm and a full day on Tuesday. I competed in the 50 metres Freestyle, the 50 metres Butterfly and the 100 metres Butterfly. The whole experience was quite unreal. All swimmers displayed exceptional skills and it was a blessing to watch them move through the water and use the talents God has given them. I did not place in anything but nonetheless it was very encouraging and inspiring to see such talent at work. The atmosphere at the Olympic Pool is always phenomenal and I'm very thankful for the opportunity I had to swim there. Overall, despite the challenge it was to race amazing swimmers, I had a great time and created new memories of spending time enjoying one of God's great gifts to us.' Ollie E

Well done Ollie, we are so proud of you!
