Galway Debating
Students across Year 8 to Year 11 have been participating in Galway Debating this term.
In Round 1, students debated a range of topics that included: Australia’s place as an international citizen, the cost of tertiary education and the creation of the Internet. For Round 2, students debated an equally interesting series of topics that included: video game classification, student voice and protest and the public’s right to know all.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to formally debate and learn new skills like rebuttal and working together via use of team lines and creating cohesive arguments. We are now busily preparing for Round 3 which will be held on 29 July. We are so proud of our Aitken Debating representatives and look forward to hearing them all debate once again next term.
Public Speaking
Our Public Speaking Coach, Mrs Jarvis-Dymond, is currently working with students in Year 7 to Year 9 to prepare and refine their speeches for the upcoming heats of the Legacy Public Speaking Award. She is also working with two students who will be entered into the VCAA Plain English Speaking Award. We certainly look forward to hearing our students speaking and engaging their respective organisations' representatives. Stay tuned for more news on the ‘Public Speaking’ front.
