Wellbeing and Leadership Conference

Please enjoy the following pieces from our students reflecting on their recent experiences at the Student Wellbeing Incursion focused on resilience and the National Young Leaders Conference that our SLC recently attended.

The Student Wellbeing Incursion has directly linked to the Student Wellbeing Program taught at St Bridget's, titled 'Bounce Back' which is used as a whole school approach and is featured in all classrooms from Prep through to Year 6. The purpose of Bounce Back is to teach our students about resilience through explicit lessons.

The National Young Leaders Conference is an annual event attended by our Year 5/6 Student Leaders. The event forms part of the Leadership Program that our school offers and is hosted by Halogen. The students have an opportunity to listen to a number of inspiring young people who have overcome some challenges in their life to become successful leaders in their field of expertise.

Student Wellbeing Incursion - Resilience

Last week, a man named Tim Powell came to talk to the students of St. Bridget’s about wellbeing and resilience. He was from a group called Values for Life. We watched a nice story about a boy called Ezra who had one leg and three fingers on one hand and two on the other. The message from the story was that despite personal hardship anything is possible through hard work and perseverance.

We also learned how to bounce back if we are going through a hard time. For example: if you moved to a new school and you didn't know nobody or your closest relative passed away. He taught us how to move on but not to forget the past and to prepare for what is coming next in life. I really enjoyed the incursion and I hope we can have more in the future.

National Young Leaders Conference

The SLC students went to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre for the National Young Leaders Conference. The presenters included Lachie Smart the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world, Jordan Lewis the AFL premiership hero, Jimmy Rees the host from 'Giggle and Hoot', Josh Pyke Aria Award-winning musician and author, and Michelle Young the Deputy Commissioner for Fire Safety. They told us inspiring stories of how leadership is about being brave, persisting, and just trying your best. Most of them had awe-inspiring stories of how they became who they are today. I took a lot away from that experience and I now know a lot more about leadership. It was one of the most fun events of the year so far for me and I loved it. I had a lot to talk about when I got home.
