VCE

General Achievement Test (GAT): June 9
Each year all students enrolled in one or more VCE subject or scored VCE VET Unit 3 and 4 sequences must undertake the VCAA General Achievement Test (GAT). The GAT is a test of general knowledge and skills in three areas:
- Written communication
- Mathematics, Science and Technology
- Humanities, the Arts and Social Sciences
The GAT will be held on Wednesday 9 June , beginning at 10:00 AM and concluding at 1:15 PM.
No special study is required for the GAT. Past study of subjects like English, Mathematics, Science and History prepares students for the GAT by building their general knowledge and skills in writing, numeracy and reasoning. Students were sent feedback on their practice GAT along with the assessor’s report. They may refer to these in preparation.
The following materials are permitted or required to sit the GAT:
- an English and/or bilingual printed dictionary may be used
- a blue or black pen for the two Writing Tasks
- a pencil for responses on the Multiple-Choice Answer Sheet
Not permitted:
- A thesaurus or a combined thesaurus-dictionary is not permitted
- Electronic dictionaries and calculators are not allowed
The GAT results:
- do not count directly towards a student’s VCE results
- help check that school-based and external assessments have been accurately assessed
- contribute to statistical moderation of school-based assessment results
- help calculate Derived Examination Scores
- determine scores in school-based assessment, external assessment and if a derived examination score is required due to illness, accident and trauma.
There is a close correlation between receiving good GAT results and academic achievement. For further information about the GAT and its importance, please visit the following page on the VCAA website: Scored assessment: General Achievement Test
Please do not hesitate to contact me at the College (telephone: 9795 8100) if there are any concerns with these arrangements.
Year 11 Student ELEVATE Session : June 1
Elevate Education is an external company that runs study skills seminars for students to support their studies. On 1 June, Year 11 students will participate in the ‘Elevate – Student Elevation’ session to examine the fundamental beliefs key for senior school success and introduce students to a range of growth mindset-based skills.
Students will explore the following skills during the session:
BELIEF - Students learn about the psychology of belief and analyse its effect on their performance.
GOAL SETTING - All students are led through a 4-step goal-setting process, helping them to identify unique and compelling reasons to drive them through their final years. Goals are based on the student’s ambitions, and include career, university, and vocational study-based goals.
SHORT TERM PLANNING - Once students have identified their goals, they are lead through a short-term planning process to help them break their goal into a series of achievable, short- term benchmarks.
We hope our Year 11s find this valuable in planning their future leading them to much success and growth.
ELEVATE Parent Seminar Feedback: 18 May
We thank the parent community at Nazareth College for attending the ELEVATE Parent Seminar. The program began with a few technical mishaps but eventually managed to keep our virtual audiences engaged. Most of the parents that attended the seminar felt the session was helpful. A few of the comments received in the feedback were:
“The most important thing I learned today was the importance of goal clarity.”
“Setting realistic study timelines”
“….the importance of talking to people in the industry you want to join.”
