Year 7 Health and PE Indigenous Dance Incursion

On Monday 17 May and Tuesday 18 May our Year 7s engaged in an indigenous dance session as part of their Dance Unit in Health and Physical Education practical classes.

The Indigenous Dance Program worked from the template of ‘Liyan a Nyikina’, an expression springing from the Kimberleys region meaning ‘To Connect to Country and Spirit’. The mentors brought together dance, cultural activities and conversations to take the students on a journey of understanding our country's past, while connecting it with the spirit world through the medium of Arts, Dance and Performance Theatre.

The Year 7s students were engaged in the program and attentive, learning about the Indigenous culture, dreamtime stories and connection to land through dance. Students left feeling inspired and stimulated by the incredibly relatable mentors, who were able to engage and connect on a social and emotional level with our students. It was a Dance session that the Year 7 students will not forget.

Top Designs Excursion

Both the year 11 and 12 VCE PDT (Textiles) and VCE Visual Communication students made their way to Melbourne Museum to look at the VCE Season of Excellence Top Designs for these two areas of study. This was a great experience to see top students from across Victoria showcase their designs and folios. It gave the students inspiration and drive to have their own folios and designs up to a high standard.

After viewing the exhibition the Year 12 VCE PDT Textiles students, accompanied by Ms Heather O’Brien and me, walked to The Fabric Store in Brunswick St to do some primary research about choice of fabrics and trims for their own folios and garments.  They were also able to collect samples of fabrics.

It was a great day and certainly worth the visit.

Top Arts Excursion

The Year 11 and 12 Studio Arts students headed out to the National Gallery of Victoria to explore the wonderful work of the Top Arts exhibition. The exhibition featured the best of the best artworks by the Year 12 art students of 2020. We were all so impressed and inspired with the ideas and technical skills of so many of the works.

Next up was a trip down Hosier Lane to immerse ourselves in the world of Melbourne’s street art hub. We even took a few minutes to create our own mini artworks, inspired by the street art, using our phone apps. A fantastic day was had by all!

Building Bridges

Last week Nazareth hosted the Building Bridges Interfaith program. It was a welcome return after not running last year. The aim of the program is to build bridges through dialogue. Over 70 students spent the early evening sharing a meal, playing games and talking. Small groups, guided by trained facilitators, give students the space to learn dialogue skills with others about similarities and differences, and how we can learn from each other's stories to build links, a much-needed effort in the world.

There is room for two more Year 10 or 11 students to join the nine Nazarenes who have enjoyed the two sessions we have had so far. Please contact Mr Nathan for further details.

God bless.

Bicentennial Mass

Seven Year 10 students and I attended the Bicentennial Mass of Catholic Education in Australia. We took almost an hour to travel from our campus to St Patrick’s Cathedral. First, I was impressed by the inside of the Cathedral because it was the first time I have entered inside it. The Mass was the celebration of the 200th year of Catholic Education in Australia and, especially, 181 years in Melbourne. The Mass was celebrated by our Archbishop Peter Comensoli, alongside with six other priests including our new elected Bishop - Monsignor Anthony Ireland. The School choir of Loyola College Watsonia who contributed to the Mass did such an amazing job - their voices were fantastic. There were over 50 schools from across the Archdiocese that came to the Mass.

At the end of the day, when we finished celebrating the Mass, we had a chance to take a photo with the Archbishop and surprisingly, our photo has been chosen to be the cover image on the Archdiocese news website. Overall, the Mass was a celebration which gathered everybody together and it made us get to know how big the number of Catholic Schools in Melbourne is.
