Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning Report

PISA Testing and the Review of the Australian Curriculum

A selection of Year 10 students will be undertaking PISA testing from Wednesday 26 May to Friday 28 May.

The OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) examines what students know in reading, mathematics and science, and what they can do with what they know. It provides the most comprehensive and rigorous international assessment of student learning outcomes to date. Results from PISA indicate the quality and equity of learning outcomes attained around the world, and allow educators and policy makers to learn from the policies and practices applied in other countries.

The last time the PISA test took place was 2018. I have reproduced part of the results table below. This shows that students in Australia scored higher than the OECD average in reading, not significantly different from the OECD average in mathematics, and higher than the OECD average in science.

When the results of the 2018 PISA were released, Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan agreed the 'very disappointing' results should ring alarm bells, and he called for a de-cluttering of the curriculum in favour of the basics - literacy and numeracy. This has resulted in the current review of the Australian Curriculum. At the moment, teachers, students and parents can undertake a survey about the proposed changes to the Australian Curriculum. You can find the survey at: https://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/consultation/
