The Library Reading Program

All classes from Years 7 – 9 are scheduled time each fortnight to come to the Library for a Book Talk with our Teacher Librarian, Bernadette Kean. This is an opportunity for the students to see the new books, share with others their favourite books, ask for recommendations and spend time browsing the shelves. Once they have made a selection they can borrow and spend some time reading quietly. We are fortunate at Kilbreda to be able to provide students with this valuable time to browse, choose and read but we still expect that they would be reading every day at home as well.

The Year 8 students are currently using their Book Talk time to familiarise themselves with the six books on the BYOB (buy your own book) list from which they must choose one to buy and study in Term 3.

Information Literacy Programs

In Term One all Year 7 classes were shown how to write a bibliography that meets our requirements at Kilbreda. These requirements are set out on our Bibliography Libguide that can be accessed from SIMON. The level of complexity for bibliographies increases as the students progress through the school and students in some Year 11 classes have recently been asked to include in-text citations as part of their referencing.

All students have access to a wealth of information resources and databases on the Kilbreda Libguides which can be accessed via SIMON from anywhere in the world.

Book Week

Kilbreda will be celebrating Book Week from 12 June to 19 June. There will be many fun and engaging activities for students and these will be advertised on SIMON as the date draws closer. The theme for Book Week this year is “Reading is my secret power.”

Parent Book Group

We have been running a book group for parents for seven years now. The dates are published on the school calendar and our next gathering is Wednesday 17 July. These gatherings are an opportunity for parents to meet other parents, chat about their daughters and to read and discuss some of the amazing books we have in our collection. If you would like to go on the email list to get reminders a week before the gatherings, please email me your details at  Bernadette.Kean@kilbreda.vic.edu.au
