Years 5 and 6 learning about Biomes, August 2018

Tuning In

On Wednesday 8 August, the teachers came to school in really strange clothes. Mr Morris was dressed in a snowsuit, Mrs Stevens was dressed in an explorer’s outfit, Mrs Gebbetis was in snorkelling gear, Ms Banks in a snow jacket and tracksuit pants and Mrs Haring was in a ranger’s outfit. Each teacher set up their classroom so it matched their clothing. Oh, and don’t forget Mrs Currey’s outfit of a zebra print dressing gown. Mrs Gebbetis’ biome was my favourite because her under the sea themed biome had live fish in a tiny pool! It was fun to look at but I wished I could have touched them (some fish were poisonous so… better not to touch.) I had a really fun time reflecting and participating in the morning.

On Wednesday 8 August, the Years 5 and 6 teachers dressed up as people from different biomes. We  ventured through the classes to find out about the different animals that live there. The different biomes were under the sea, the rainforest, antarctica, the savannah, the alpine tundra and the desert. In the under the sea classroom, there were live fish which were most students favourite. We did a few quizzes and some fun activities. These were for the tuning in to our new unit of inquiry - Where we are in place and time.

On Wednesday 8 August, Years 5 and 6 had a tuning in exercise for their new unit of inquiry - Where we are in place and time. The five teachers and Mrs Currey dressed up as someone from a specific biome. The six biomes were the ocean, rainforest, polar, savannah, alpine and desert. It was a fun learning experience for all of us, especially the live fish in Mrs Gebbetis's classroom! We also enjoyed the fake snow in Mr Morris's classroom and the migration game with Mrs Currey.

On 8 August the Year 5 and 6 students were shocked to come to school and find that both their teachers and classrooms had been completely transformed into one of the six major biomes of the world. Students had the opportunity to pass through the different biomes to learn about each one and complete some activities. From live fish to homemade snow, searching in the rainforest to running in the savannah, climbing mountains, and hanging out in the desert proved the morning a great (and fun) success.

Year 12 Biz Fest 2018

On Tuesday 14 August, the Year 12 students had their Biz Fest. All the students were given $20 to start a business for their Business Certificate III with all the profits from the business going to Anglicare. At lunch we went to the Technology Centre to find a long queue at every stall. Within 15 minutes a number of the stalls had sold out of merchandise. Altogether they raised more than $400. I am looking forward to the Year 11 Biz Fest next.

On Tuesday, my fellow Junior Reporters and I got the chance to visit the Year 12 Biz Fest. We interviewed some of the stall owners about their businesses. Ashleigh sold lip gloss for $2 and had several flavours including strawberry and watermelon. Ethan and Kiara sold CDs for $3. Jade and Sophie were selling brownies for $2 because who doesn't like chocolate?! Patrick started a 'Carbon Decor' which is a business making items out of recycled wood while Tom and Liam were selling lolly bags for $1. The Biz Fest raised over $400 for Anglicare. Good job Year 12s!

On Tuesday14 August at lunch time the Year 12 Biz Fest was held. The Year 12 students were given $20 to create a business as part of their Business Certificate III. Then they held a small market where students could buy items. From lip balm to CDs, woodwork, waffles and many other delicious things. Biz Fest was very yummy and extremely busy. They raised over $400 for Anglicare and I am looking forward to it again next year.
