National Science Week Fair - Indigo Dyeing, August 2018

From the Deputy Principal Pastoral Care, Nick Jones

The Term 3 calendar contains a range of co-curricular and community events at John Wollaston Anglican Community School. These events are important in allowing us to come together and continue to develop that very special sense of community that exists at our school. Learning experiences are not confined to the four walls of our classrooms. Students experience a great deal when they fully involve themselves in school events and activities. There is a range of research that supports the importance we place on our co-curricular program at John Wollaston. When students are engaged in the many activities and events that occur outside the classroom, the benefits include:

  • Strengthened self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Exposure to new activities and discovery of new talents
  • Development of social skills and stronger relationships with peers
  • Promotion of overall personal development and increased prospects for future opportunities

These can also develop important character strengths such as identity, community spirit, compassion and empathy.

I was very impressed with the spirit and passion that was on display during the Wollaston Dash and the Secondary Inter-House Athletics Carnival held this week. Students exhibited a healthy dose of competitive spirit and House pride and we congratulate Charter House and Hale House for their victories in the respective competitions.

As we prepare for our annual Founders’ Day celebrations next Wednesday 22 August, our students are demonstrating a pleasing level of empathy and compassion for others as they donate new pairs of socks in support of the homeless community. I thank all families who have donated to this important initiative and I remind all that you have until next Tuesday 21 August to bring in your sock donations. Our goal is to present 1,000 pairs of socks to the ‘Socks in the City’ appeal. I have no doubt that we will achieve this goal.

All the best.
