Year 12 Wollaston's Dash competitors, August 2018
I spent last weekend in Sydney attending Anglican Schools Australia's Annual Conference. With the Conference theme, Deep Peace, which draws inspiration from the beautiful Gaelic blessing of the same name, we considered whether 'deep peace' is possible in the complex, frenetic world that our students, staff and parents experience in their lives. As the Conference Chair offered in his welcome, "What message can Anglican schools convey about the 'deep peace' of Christ?"; "Is it possible to know this 'deep peace' in the tumult of an uncertain future; and how can this peace be conveyed in a manner that is authentic and not trivialised by trite sentimentality?"; "How can we be real and yet at peace?" The speakers explored these and other questions throughout the two days. It was a stimulating and enjoyable conference.
Secondary Athletics
This week we have had a feast of athletics commencing with the second annual Wollaston Dash, an Inter-House relay around the campus. Each team comprised six runners, one from each year level from Years 7 to 12. Further, teams had to include at least one male and female. With the Secondary students lining the course, Charter House were victorious with Charter Prefect, Liam Palmer anchoring the final leg to an impressive victory. Congratulations to all of the competitors on a great event!
On Wednesday 15 August, the Secondary Inter-House Athletics Carnival was held at Ern Clark Athletic Centre in Cannington. Sunny weather saw great participation and fast times on the track, including some new records. In a close competition, Hale House prevailed. Congratulations to all Haleians led by Head of House, Brendan Kilmartin and Hale Prefect, Jordan Stone! Thank you to Head of Health and Physical Education, Lonneke Holleman who coordinated the event, staff who assisted in a variety of roles and the parents and family members who attended in support of their children.
The final results of the Inter-House Athletics Carnival were:
1st: Hale House (1365)
2nd: Ramsden House (1343)
3rd: Charter House (1038)
4th: Scott House (1019)
Founders' Day
The School will celebrate its 29th birthday on Founders' Day next Wednesday 22 August. The school community is invited to join special guests, staff and students at the Founders' Day Service which will commence at 9:00am in the Berry Durston Indoor Sports Centre. We are delighted that The Right Reverend Kate Wilmot, Assistant Bishop of Perth will lead our worship and The Reverend Peter Laurence OAM, Chief Executive Officer of the Anglican Schools Commission will address the congregation. Each year the offertory and proceeds of the afternoon stalls and activities are donated to charity. This year we will be supporting two worthy, complementary causes; namely the Socks in the City appeal and Anglicare's Street Connect, also an initiative to address the needs of the homeless. Our target is to donate 1000 pairs of socks to the homeless in Perth. Year 6 students have established a sock-o-meter and present indications are that we will reach our target. If you haven't done so already, please consider donating a pair of new socks, made from natural fibres of mostly cotton or wool and of adult size, to the cause.
