NUMERACY

This term, we explored mathematical concepts such as data collection, fractions, time, chance, capacity and addition and subtraction. We participated in a range of hands on, problem solving activities through out the term. These activities were aimed at not only improving understandings of concepts, but also on improving social skills, particularly as most tasks were collaborative tasks.
In our capacity unit, the children were able to experiment with different sized containers. In small groups, they put the containers into an order they believed was least to greatest capacity. They were then able to experiment using water, and made some interesting discoveries. They disproved their theory that tall containers would always hold more than small containers, and discovered that sometimes short and wide containers might hold more.
We explored different ways of collecting data. The children practised using tally marks and graphs to collect and observe data patterns. They had the opportunity to use packets of Smarties to graph the different colours. We then answered questions based on their data.
We also had a strong focus on place value and number this term. Our students had the opportunity to move to different classrooms, to work with different Yea 1/2 teachers on different concepts. The children enjoyed working with different peers and staff.
