LITERACY

Reading

This term, we have been exploring a variety of non-fiction texts such as information books, dictionaries and atlas'. We have discussed the features of non-fiction books, such as contents pages, glossaries, index pages, maps, diagrams and graphs. The children have enjoyed using books to research information, and have loved sharing fun facts with the class.

We explored the use of dictionaries and had a strong focus on putting words in alphabetical order. The children enjoyed having the opportunity to create their own dictionaries, which they have been using to help them with their reading and writing.

Writing

We spent the term developing our writing skills, particularly focusing on nouns, verbs, adjectives, synonyms and antonyms. We used these to develop an interesting sequel to a fairy tale. We enjoyed reading a variety of fairy tales and using our imagination to consider what might happen next in the story.

We also focused on editing our writing this term, particularly through the use of the VCOP Student Friendly Criteria and Bump Up Walls, which are a visual representation of how our children can improve their writing. These tools have assisted students to become independent learners and to begin self-reflecting on their own work, rather than relying on teacher feedback.

Phonics

We have focused on five different spelling rules with the children this term, and have had a strong focus on including the rules in everyday reading and writing, rather than just in phonics lessons. We have been delighted with the growth that has been demonstrated this term, due to the hard work undertaken at school and at home.
