As Term 2 draws to a close, we look back on everything that our Year 10s have achieved this semester with pride. It has been a busy and exciting start to their senior school career, with a large emphasis on each student’s future. Our Year 10s have successfully completed their work experience, their first lot of electives and have just sat their mid-year exams. Career action plans

Over the past two months, students have been working towards completing their Career Action Plans (CAPs) online and booking in interviews with our Careers Counsellors, Nancy Huez O’Rourke and Liz Hassell. The CAPs are designed to help young people to identify possible future careers based on their strengths and interests, as well as provide them with the skills that they need to manage their personal pathways in the future. It is important that all students have completed their Career Action Plan this term, as they will be attending Course Counselling early in Term 3 in the lead up to selecting their Year 11 pathways. Please encourage your child to complete their CAP if they haven’t already done so and ask them where their interests lie – they may surprise you!

Formal

On Wednesday 27th of June the Year 10s will be attending their long awaited Formal. The Home Group captains have been working hard over the past term to ensure that everyone has a fantastic evening and they have done an amazing job. There are over 100 students who will be attending, and it is shaping up to be a fantastic night. The formal begins at 7pm, where there will be a sit-down dinner to provide energy for all of the dancing to follow. There will also be a photographer on site to capture all of the moments that will make up this very special night for our students. We look forward to being able to share this night with our students and the opportunity to socialise in a different setting.

Theatre studies

On the evening of Wednesday 6th of June, 19 of our Year 10 students put on their performance of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Students made up the entire cast and crew and had been working intensively with their teacher, Mrs Grey, since Step Up at the end of 2017. The performance followed the complicated love story of four young Athenians who are subject to fates games. Overall the play was amusing, with students getting into character and showing off their creative flair. We were very impressed by our talented Theatre Studies class.

The Love and Sorrow Exhibition- 9A Excursion

Our focus in Humanities this term has been World War One.  On the 5th of June, we went on an excursion related to the experiences of the Victorian soldiers and nurses who were in active service at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. We went to the Melbourne Museum, where we visited the Love and Sorrow exhibition. The exhibition also featured stories and experiences of Victorian society during the war. It was a very meaningful and educational excursion as it allowed us to view the War from the perspectives of those who were involved, both at home and at war.

During our visit we each chose two of the many veterans the exhibit featured and followed their story through the maze-like confines of the exhibit. There were many artefacts and items in the displays from the time of WW1, which means our excursion had some very meaningful and relevant concepts displayed.

As we followed the war veteran’s stories, we learned some very interesting details about the war and its physical/mental effects on the soldiers and their families. We were deeply engaged in the experience and formed a bond with the veterans.  Some of our class became quite emotional.

After spending our very meaningful and interesting time at the Love and Sorrow exhibit, we were given 1 hour of free time to roam around the entire museum.

As a whole, our excursion was truly engaging and brought our classroom learning to life.  We were very grateful towards Ms Bond for organizing the excursion and Ms Mawal and Miss Pate for supervising us. It was a very good day and it certainly raised a few eyebrows.

Marvel The Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N - 9B Excursion

On the 24th of May, the 9B STEM class had the privilege of attending the Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N near Federation Square in the city. S.T.A.T.I.O.N is an acronym for Science Training and Tactical Intelligence Operative Network. Our students were able to train like an Avenger and become an official S.T.A.T.I.O.N. agent by delving into the science, history, engineering, genetics and technology behind our favourite super heroes. Students were able to explore an extensive range of Avengers operation equipment such as Captain America’s uniform and shield, Iron Man’s Armoury and the Hulkbuster suit, as well as Thor’s mighty hammer and Black Panther’s mask. The experience integrates large scale interactive screens and games that enabled us to experience a Bi-Frost simulation, a strength test vs the Marvel heroes, power Iron Man’s blasters and so much more.

Access Monash

Throughout Term 2 a group of year 9 students have been working on a project with Monash students called the Access Monash program. We were given the challenge of teaching other students about Tertiary education such as University, Apprenticeships and TAFE. Our plan, as of today, is to create a Careers Day event where students from Year 9 can come and talk to people in different lines of work. This event will showcase the importance of Tertiary education and the wide variety of pathways to follow. As of this point in time, we have created a survey to measure how much students know about Tertiary education, have begun to plan a poster to display and advertise the event as well as created a video to educate everyone on the pros and cons of Tertiary Education. With roles assigned, the workflow has been consistent, and we hope to have most of this event completed by the end of July.

SPP- Sports Pathway Program

TERM 2 UPDATE

Term 2 has been a great success for the 71 students in the Sports Pathway Program. The theory unit of Sports Nutrition has given students the information and the skills to identify foods that will help them better prepare for and recover from their sporting events. Students now have an understanding of which foods will give high quality fuel for energy and which foods they should be avoiding.

Students have also continued their hard work on improving strength and conditioning with Collingwood FC coach Luke Kitchen. There have been a number of students who have commented on how their increased fitness levels have led to stronger performances in their sporting competitions.

The year 10 class had the opportunity to visit the Victorian Institute of Sport at Albert Park. Students met professional athletes who took them on a tour of the facilities, spoke about training methods, nutrition and the life of a professional athlete. It was a great insight into the professional sporting field and all students had a fantastic day.

On The 18th of June the two year 9 classes visited Melbourne Storm facilities and AAMI Park. This was a fantastic opportunity to meet Storm coaches/players and have a tour of the world class sporting facility that is AAMI Park.
