Student Success

Shaun Warren, Year 9

Shaun is part of the College's Sports Pathway Program (SPP) which is an elective for yar 9 and 10 students who are passionate about sport.

I picked up pole vaulting at the start of the season as the pole vault coach saw my high jump ability, he came up to me and said, “you have a big leap on you, have you ever tried pole vault”? It did look like a hell of a lot of fun, he told me what days training were, I went every Saturday morning.

Being my first year of taking athletics seriously I only had three days of training a week and competition days. At the start of the season I turned up to training with spikes that barely fit. After the first training coach looked me in the eyes and said, “The key to success is doing what you enjoy”. And that's when it stuck with me. So, we got to my first comp and two weeks out I sprained my ankle. I was on crutches for a week, competed, jumped 2.40 metres. I wasn’t happy with it, but coach said I came 7th in Victoria which is ok I guess. I worked hard from then to my next big comp, late nights, early mornings… all the things you would expect.

The next big comp came up and that’s when i jumped my PB of 3.10 metres which i still wasn’t happy with but everyone else was. So next was Sydney as I hit the qualifying jump of 2.40 metres. I came 6th, jumping 3.00 metres in Sydney, which again i wasn’t happy with but it was a great experience meeting some Olympians and Commonwealth Games competitors and seeing my mate the fastest 15-year-old in Australia. Overall it was a great experience seeing all my competition for next year and expectations of what needs to be changed.
