Senior School News

Senior School

I would like to introduce the Senior School Team for 2018 – Mrs Carmela Sant is the VCAL, VET and Year 12 Coordinator, Ms Kelsey Ryan the Year 11 Coordinator and myself Angela Narayan-Butler the Senior Team Leader. I have been teaching Science, Biology, PE and some Maths at Gisborne Secondary College for the last 15 years, and for many years in the area before that.  I have 4 children (the same as Mrs Sant), and know first- hand the challenges you face dealing with teenagers! We, the team are very experienced and excited to work with you and your children to ensure they have a successful year.

Students have made a really positive start to the school year. Especially those new to the school. Welcome! We have been really impressed with the great work ethic displayed by students. The set holiday homework was generally well done and really beneficial to students. Thanks to all parents and guardians for your great support in ensuring holiday homework was completed, and in equipping students with uniform and books.

SCHOOL ASSESSMENT TASKS SACs

School Assessment Task Dates are included on this Newsletter and on Compass. These dates are really important. If students are absent from these, we require a medical certificate. Remember students attendance at school is really important.

JACKETS

Students wishing to purchase a Year 12 jacket may still do so. It will close at the end of the month 28th Feb. They cost $102. Students need to use the following web link and order themselves.

STUDY CENTRE

Great to see students making use of this facility (especially as it is air-conditioned!) available till 6pm most nights. One of the best ways to learn is to teach someone else. It’s great to see many students using the whiteboards to do this. Awesome!

KITCHEN

Thanks to the students who have shown great initiative in cleaning and setting up the kitchen area. There are many cups and students are encouraged to use the facilities and make a donation for tea, coffee, Milo and milk as appropriate.

VCAL SHROVE Tuesday & SWIMMING SPORTS

The Year 11 students did a fantastic job cooking and serving pancakes to the school. It was an impressive sight. Ms Ryan taking orders with students and the production line generously providing dollops of jam, spoonfuls of sugar, squirts of maple syrup topped with swirls of canned cream. YUM!!! Luckily I didn’t teach period 5, as perhaps some students may have been on sugar highs!

Ms Baker was ably supported again by the students. They cooked many sausages, providing sauce and drinks to the hungry. Excellent opportunities and skills learned. Thanks to our capable staff.

TUTORIAL SESSIONS

The Senior School Team and Tute teachers are working on an exciting plan for sessions. These include guest speakers from Universities including Melbourne, RMIT and ACU. A motivational speaker is under consideration, and study skills planned.

We look forward to meeting and working with you. Please contact us if you have any concerns.
