Assistant Principal's Report

Our students have had a busy start to the year no doubt.  In the final few weeks of Term 1, students in Years 7 to 10 have engaged with their first Common Assessment Task (or CAT) in their subjects.  These tasks are exciting opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge, understandings and skills they have developed over the course of the Learning Sequence.  Each CAT will look slightly different, with some tasks focusing on developing written skills whilst others may take a more performance or collaborative structure, including conducting and writing up experiments in Science, to demonstrating their physical skills in PE and Drama.  Teachers will be assessing CATs over the coming couple of weeks, with results published via Compass Learning Tasks at the end of week 1 each term.  Parents/carers and students can access this important information and use this as just one of the indicators of students’ achievement and learning growth.

Parents and carers will also have the opportunity in week 2 of Term 2 to meet with their students’ teachers to discuss progress in out upcoming Learning Conferences on Wednesday May 1st.  Bookings will be open sat 3pm on Friday April 5th via Compass and we encourage all families to be making appointments so they can connect with the college and further support their students’ learning.

Outside of the classroom, students have also had many varied opportunities to experience learning in different ways through a variety of camps and excursions.  Thank you to the staff who gave up their time to go on our most recent Year 7 Coastal Discovery Camps to Phillip Island.

Some other memorable excursions our students have been lucky enough to participate in during Term 1 include exploring our local wetlands area with VCAL, learning about government planning with a visit to council offices in VCE Geography, engaging with wildlife photo shoots in Photography Club and competing in debating with other public, independent and private schools for our Debating Team.  These opportunities only serve to boost students’ abilities to learn in classes and we encourage all families to be regularly checking Compass so they can give permission and make payments for these so students get the full benefit.

I wish all students, staff and families a happy and safe break and we look forward to having all students back with us ready to hit the ground running in Term 2.
