Year 12 VCAL RYDA Excursion
On the 19th of March 2019, the Year 12 VCAL students went to Sandown Racecourse for a PDS outcome to attend the “RYDA My life: My choices” excursion. We participated in 6 hands-on workshops and got to meet Anat, a survivor from a severe car crash, who has acquired a permanent brain injury.
One of the workshops we attended was called ‘Speed & Stopping’, and it was about understanding the relationship between speed and stopping distance, and the need to keep an appropriate safe following gap. This activity was especially engaging because we got to witness crash dummies being hit from different speeds and distances.
Another workshop we participated in was hearing from a car crash survivor and her story about why people should always appreciate what you have because your life can change in a instant. She talked about her past before the incident compared to her life now, and this was a very emotional story because what she went through can happen to anyone. This was a good experience for the Year 12 VCAL because it taught us the safety on roads, the different types of situations we can be put in during driving and the outcomes after a serious accident. This excursion helped us to create our own social media campaigns which aim to promote road safety messages to share with our community.
