Year 9 Camp

Students from Year 9 had the opportunity to experience a beach camp this year. We stayed at the YMCA in Anglesea from Monday 14 to Wednesday 16 February. The weather was kind to us over these days.

Many activities were on offer for the students to participate in such as – Surfing, Bike riding, Vertical challenge, Skateboarding, Giant Swing, Initiatives, canoeing, Splash ( education activity), night walks and outdoor challenges.

I was really pleased with the positive mindset of the students and the way they had a go with the activities.

I would like to thank the staff who came and supported me on this camp. They gave up their time and willingness to join in: Ms Jackie Kol, Mr Rod Diaz, Mrs Carolyn Murphy, Mr Paull Ziegeler, Ms Antigone Kappas, Ms Caitlin Trustum, Mr Chris Brown, Mr Brendan McAleer, Mr Dan Brasher (CRT), Mr Philip Ryan and Ms Romy Bilu.

I had an amazing time at camp surfing, skating, biking, canoeing and so much more.

This year’s camp was truly enjoyable. The weather was amazing and the activities were extra fun. In my opinion, Year 9 camp was the best. We got to do surfing and skateboarding which were my two favourite activities. We also did night activities after dinner with the whole cohort; on the first night, we went on a bush walk which was delightful as we got to enjoy the scenery around us. For the second night; we got to choose our activity, whether it be going on a walk, GaGa, volleyball or basketball. (They all seemed like fun to me) The food was delicious, but I especially enjoyed the dinners; which were butter chicken with naan bread and penne pasta with garlic bread. Overall, I genuinely had such an entertaining time being with my friends and participating in the activities.

I want to start off by saying a huge thank you on behalf of the whole Year 9 level for our amazing teachers for allowing us to have such a wonderful opportunity to come together and discover our strengths. Camp was by far the most exciting yet nerve-raking event of 2022 so far. We participated in a wide range activities including the obvious favourites: surfing, the giant swing and canoeing. During this experience, I'm sure we all came a little bit out of our comfort zones and had to put a lot of trust in each other's hands. Camp was the perfect time for everybody to bond, build more developed friendships and make the big decision of whether you were going to try a scary activity or not. Without the help of our teachers, none of this could've been possible. Again, a big thank you especially to our older teachers who have young kids of their own, and know what it's like to be responsible for other people, and to our younger teachers, who can relate to us and always understand where we are coming from. We are all so very grateful and hope that one day next year, the grade after us get to experience the same incredible camp that we did.

Year 10

It is great to be back in the Science lab doing practical work this year.

The Year 10 Science class ‘Life Within Us’ are currently learning about our hereditary material (DNA) as part of their study of Genetics. The students have been doing a number of practical learning activities such as making genetics traits bracelets, origami DNA, modelling how proteins are made with licorice and sour straps; and making vegetable babies to demonstrate genetic inheritance.

This week the students will learn how to model cell division; using plasticine to model the changes to DNA in a cell.

Unit 1 Biology

The Unit 1 Biology students are learning about the characteristics of the plasma membrane surrounding a cell and have used a bubble lab to explore the structure and fluidity of the membrane.

Welcome to VINNIES for 2022

The Vinnies team for 2022 kicked off last week by electing their new Presidents for the coming year. I am very pleased to announce that this year, we have two Co-Presidents: Gabriella Brusco and Sophie Xerri, both currently in Year 11. Both students have been fantastic ambassadors for Vinnies over the past 4 years, having joined in Year 7. We wish them well in their leadership roles and congratulate them on their appointment.

We had 32 eager students attend our first meeting, ready to get on board to support the various activities that Vinnies will promote throughout the year. For those who are new, Vinnies is a social outreach group dedicated to improving the lives of others.  It would be wonderful to have a few more students across the year levels, so if you may be slightly interested in finding out more, please come along to our next meeting on Thursday 10 March in G1-17 at the start of lunch. Our Presidents will present a short PowerPoint that will enlighten you as to what we do in Vinnies. If you like the sound of it, you can sign up 😊 A particular call out to our new Year 7s to come and see what goes on. It is a wonderful way to make connections with other students across all year levels. Who knows…you may one day be elected to President!

Our focus in Term 1 is the Easter raffle. Very soon hampers will be created and students will be selling tickets to teachers and students during Pastoral and lunchtime. Money raised from the raffle will go towards the St Anthony's tutoring program, which will enable this volunteer group to purchase much-needed items such as stationery, technology and food for the students who attend after school tutoring sessions. Last year they were extremely grateful for our contributions.

As in the past, the wider school community can assist us in two ways:

1) Make an item donation to put towards our hampers. These can be brought in by students and given to Ms Douglass or any Vinnie member.

2) Purchase a raffle ticket from any Vinnie as they move around the school, or from the library at any time.

Last year we raised in excess of $600.00 so it would be wonderful to top this amount!

Please note that Meetings are held every Day 9 in G1-17 for half of lunchtime.
