Did you know that the original suggested name for MacKillop Way, Clyde North, was Mary MacKillop Way? The Nomenclature Board rejected the name as being too specific to a particular person. So, the Board decided on the more generic MacKillop Way.

The name MacKillop is a Gaelic derivation of ‘son of Phillip.’ In turn, Phillip comes from the Greek word ‘philos,’ which means love. This is quite an appropriate surname when you consider the life and work of Mary MacKillop.

Mary MacKillop was still fresh in the minds and hearts of Australian Catholics when the first students entered the Clyde North Campus in 2011. This was because Benedict XVI canonised St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop in October 2010.

There is a symmetry between Mary MacKillop and the Clyde North Campus: St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop is Australia’s first canonized saint, and one of the newest universal saints. The Clyde North campus was the newest campus in the Diocese of Sale.

The name MacKillop Way and MacKillop House reminds the community of St. Peter’s College, Clyde North Campus of both the role that Mary MacKillop played in Catholic Education and the vibrant nature of Catholic Education, which is apparent in the community of St. Peter’s College, Clyde North Campus.
