Year 3-6 Sector
News
Can you believe that we are already half way through the term? The year 3’s have slowly settled into classroom routines and are really delving into the curriculum more each and every week.
Writing:
As we hit the midway point for our term, we begin to wrap up our Persuasive writing unit. The grade 3 cohort has done a great job at convincing us that children should be paid to complete their chores. They have brought up some very valid reasons for these payments including teaching children how to be responsible with their money, allowing them to make decisions on how they spend their money and not to mention they reminded us how hard and tiring completing chores around the house can be. In the upcoming weeks we will put our creative thinking hats on and immerse ourselves in narrative writing.
Maths:
The grade 3 cohort has been working on their place value and adding numbers using the jump strategy. Students have been exposed to some new vocab, words like Expanded notation and notation have been introduced. The students will be working on more problem solving strategies to solve subtraction problems in coming weeks. They have been working hard to tell time and utilising sign out sheets to practice. Students next measurement unit will be on length, perimeter and area.
‘I liked doing the jump strategy and understanding place value more.’

‘My favourite thing in Maths is using the jump strategy to solve problems because it’s really fun.’ Jake 3A
‘What I enjoy in Maths is the jump strategy using number lines. I have also liked the time activities. I hope I can learn more strategies to solve problems as they have been fun.’
Emily 3A
‘I have enjoyed the new assessments we have been using. It’s called Essential Assessment. We have done a range of different tests on them so far.’

“I have enjoyed working with my friends in groups so that we were able to help each other out. It was good to learn something new together’

Reading:
In Reading, students will be finishing their Persuasive Texts unit in the coming weeks. Our students have been learning lots about the different persuasive text types and identifying their specific text features. We have learnt how authors use effective persuasive techniques to convince the reader and identify text clues to sequence persuasive texts! Next, we will be looking at how to use the process of elimination to answer multiple choice questions about various persuasive texts. Check out some of our great work in the Reading space so far:

What’s been happening?
The Year 4 students have already established good routines in their classrooms for Term 1 and are well and truly into their learning journey for the year. It is great to see the establishments and organisation amongst the students.
Firstly, we would like to say a huge congratulations to everyone who presented a speech to their class for the Student Voice Captain opportunity. Everyone did a great job with their speeches. Congratulations to our new Class Captains and Vice Captains in Year 4 who will do an outstanding job this year with representing their class and sharing student ideas.
The year 3-6 swimming carnival was a huge success and the year 4’s had a great day in the sun! We had perfect conditions and lots of talent in the pool. Well done on everyone that competed and for those who made it to the District Swimming Carnival. It was great to see so much encouragement from our students.
The year 4’s have begun their homework for the year and have already set high standards. This is a reminder to families that homework will be given out each Monday and will need to be returned on Friday, along with students reading each night and recording this in their diaries.
We are well underway in all our subject areas. In writing, students are working on their own persuasive pieces with very convincing arguments. In reading, we have started to identify main ideas in an article to write our own summaries. In maths, we have really been enjoying conducting our own chance and probability experiments. Our science unit has been enjoyable, with lots of hands on learning and understanding how forces work in the real world.
Reading:
In Year 5, we have been summarising our reading and reading different texts. We have been answering different questions like which are more trustworthy or what texts persuade you more. We also have been finding facts and evidence for our summaries, and including our questions and evidence in our sentences.
Math:
We have been focusing on multiplication. The year fives have been learning how to use the Area Model strategy in math to solve multiplication problems.
Writing:
In writing, we have been learning how to write a persuasive text. We have started writing our drafts on our new topic. We have been learning persuasive devices to use in our texts. We have also been learning about the OREO structure for writing a persuasive paragraph, which includes opinion, reason, evidence and opinion.
