Prep

The prep students have been working really hard over the last couple of weeks. Some of their new experiences have been going to the library to borrow books, meeting the grade 6 students and learning new games to help with their learning.

As the students first got introduced to the magnificent app ‘Reading Eggs’, the grade 6 students came over to help them log on and complete their placement test. Both the prep and the grade 6 students had a great time together chatting and exploring the app. They kept asking when they were going to do it again. Lucky for them, we will plan some more activities throughout the year.

During their classroom learning they have been learning new games in Reading and Maths. Some of the games have been ‘Get Out Of My House’, ‘Bingo’, ‘Memory’ and ‘Snakes and Ladders’. The preps have also been participating in learning centres with fun activities using playdough and puzzles.

All the prep teachers have been so proud of all the hard work from the preps so far.

Year One

Term 1 is flying by. So much learning has been taking place and lots of fun has been had by all. Here is a snapshot of some of the learning that we’ve been doing in some of our subjects. 

In writing we’ve been busy writing about a range of different experiences. We wrote a recount about blowing bubbles, created beautiful drawings with chalk in the school yard and watched a video teaching us how to draw a panda. 

Avneet from 1C was able to follow the instructions when watching a YouTube video to draw her very own panda. After drawing the panda she wrote about the experience.

William from 1C was able to draw, trace, write and order a sentence to write about his experience after drawing with chalk in the school yard. 

In science, we had fun learning about different materials. Students had to work in a team to design a tower and were able to use raw spaghetti, cooked spaghetti, little or big marshmallows to build a tower.

In maths we have been busy learning about numbers and have been learning how to draw towers of ten. Data, graphing and using tally marks has been another big focus. All grade 1 classes found out what the most popular ice cream flavour was.  The options included chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and bubble gum. In 1C, bubble gum ice cream was a clear favourite with 14 students enjoying this flavour the most. Strawberry was the least favourite with only one student enjoying this flavour.

During play-based learning we have continued to explore families. The main focus during the last two weeks has been exploring things that families love to do. Some of the popular things shared by students include, going to the beach, going to the cinema, playing at the park and eating together as a family.

Year Two

Reading and Writing

The students in Year 2 are working hard on their literacy skills. In our Literacy program, we have been reading Imaginative texts and answering questions about them. We have been reading in pairs and as a whole grade in choral reading and echo reading. In Spelling, we are learning about diagraphs (i.e., two letters that make one sound), such as, ai/ay, ea/ee, igh/y, ao/ow, ew/ue. 

Writing

In Writing, we have been writing recounts about our weekends and Storybook stories that we have read, such as ‘Willy the Wimp’ and ‘The Snail and the Whale’. We have been learning about nouns, pronouns and proper nouns in our grammar lessons.

Maths  

In Maths, we have been working on Place Value. We are identifying different numbers, and describing the value of each digit in a number. We have also worked on number patterns and predicting the next number in a pattern.

Play Based Learning

In Play Based Learning, we are still focussing on learning about our differences and similarities We have drawn self -portraits, made collages and practised plays.

The Year 2 teachers have allocated Reading Eggs and Mathletics homework each week.
