National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 19th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. Lockleys North took part in the National Simultaneous Storytime along with over a million other children from around Australia and New Zealand. We supported this event to promote the value of reading and literacy, to have fun with books, to respond to literature through hands-on and stimulating activities and to provide opportunities for the students to engage with a range of literature.

A report from Angelina & Maya (T18)

On Friday, we watched a reading of the book ‘Alpacas with Maracas’ by Matt Cosgrove. The book was about Alpacas with Maracas. The Alpacas wanted to go in a talent show, but they didn’t have much talent. They tried to do many different things until they found what they were good at. They knew they were good at shaking so they used maracas for their talent. But they did not care even though they came 22nd and they took a happy photo with the winners.

We thought the book was a lot of fun and most people enjoyed it. There were real alpacas that we saw behind the story tellers and one alpaca was asleep. It was hilarious and funny.

In Torrens, our teachers presented a Demo Slam, where they presented to us the 6 different activities we could choose from. They were all awesome! We then chose our favourite activity. The activities we could choose from were Alpaca Puppets, Hama Bead Alpaca Badges, Alpaca Face Masks, Furry Alpacas, Alpaca Maracas and Alpacas with Glasses.

The activities that we did were fun and great. Some were hilarious and some were very funky.

Here is a video of what we did on the day. Enjoy!
