NAIDOC Week

Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

National NAIDOC Week celebrations were held across Australia last week (July 3rd-10th), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme - Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!  - is a call for action. First Nations people have been taking action to fight for their freedom and create change since Australia was colonised. This theme also helps explore ways Australians can stand alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as advocates and allies; and how the future might look when we all Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

During Library lessons this week, students have been listening and responding to a range of books written and illustrated by First Nations people. They have been learning about the Traditional Country our school is situated on - Boon Wurrung / Bunurong land and identifying ways in which we can Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

There have also been NAIDOC Week activities happening during lunchtimes in the Library. Students have been invited to make NAIDOC Week bookmarks, listen to Dreamtime Stories and participate in the whole school t-shirt design competition
