Engagement in Mathematics

In mathematics this term the staff and students are having a focus on engagement in mathematics. The word engagement takes on many different meanings. The experts define engagement in mathematics as the following:

  • Mathematics is a subject students enjoy learning
  • Mathematics is at students level - challenging but not too challenging
  • Students value their mathematics learning and see its relevance in their own lives now and in the future
  • Students see connections between the mathematics they learn at school and the mathematics they use outside school. (Attard 2012)

In the newsletters this term, students across different Year levels will be sharing their thoughts about when they feel engaged in their mathematics learning. Here is a snapshot of the thoughts of our Year 6 students.

ShanelleI find maths engaging when I find a question with a new solving strategy which helps me with other problems.
Lucie I find maths engaging when we get to work in a pair and do fun projects like the zoo and now the dream trip!
LauraI am most engaged in my mathematical learning when the teachers give me hard word questions that include many steps to solve.
NikolaiI am most engaged in maths when I am learning something new. The thing that helps me most in maths is being able to communicate with friends.  I find maths engaging because I like doing maths tasks.
Daniel I find maths engaging when I get challenged and when I don’t know something about it.
