Mathematics Student of the Week

Congratulations Abbey Shortis, who is our maths student of the week. Abbey is new to St Joseph’s this year and has been really successful, demonstrating a large amount of growth (average 367%) and a very high level of accuracy.

Mr Leslie interviewed Abbey to find out more about her approach:

How is maths at St Joseph’s different to your previous experience?

It’s a little different to my previous school. I am used to all students learning from a teacher up the front using a whiteboard. I really like that at St Joseph’s every student can work at their own pace in maths. We can also work at our own level. Maths Pathway is a more independent form of learning. I really like that my mum can track my progress in real time. She can see if I have completed all my modules for the cycle and can celebrate with me when I get a good growth score.

What is motivating you this year?

Having a goal! I am really keen to do maths methods next year. I only have 40 modules left to meet the entry requirements, but I want to do more than this so I am really well prepared. I am aiming for between 7 and 12 modules each cycle. This means I often complete some of the modules at home. My brother has been really helpful when I get stuck at home.

What has helped you to be successful this year?

The mini-lessons I’ve had with Mr Armfield and Mrs Russell have really helped me. They gather a small group of us who are all ready to learn the same thing and teach us the concept. If we don’t understand, they keep persisting until we get it.
