Murray River Culinary Challenge

During Term 2, Bendigo Tafe, Echuca Campus regional Kitchen Operations students participated in the annual Murray River Culinary Challenge.

The culinary challenge is a partnership program with LLENs and Structured Workplace Learning Programs in towns bordering the Murray River. Coordinator Jacq Campbell says the event promotes vocational training within the community and creates opportunities for student participants to engage with industry. The challenge is highly regarded by the hospitality industry as an opportunity to mentor and encourage young aspiring chefs to work in the industry.

Five students participated in the challenge, requiring them to complete a three-course meal for the judges, consisting of a panzanella (Italian tomato & bread salad), cauliflower risotto and fresh fruit platter, within the set time constraints. All students showed their skills and emerging experience in the kitchen, being highly commended by the judges for their knife skills, attention to detail and time management.

Aisha Shebani is a quiet achiever in the kitchen and produced three outstanding dishes, taking the first place. She was closely followed by her bench partner Bronte O'Toole and special mention to Grace Raftry showing a cool head under pressure in third place.
