Heroes of Change

This week Living Waters celebrated NAIDOC Week. As part of the activities in class, students have been learning about ‘Heroes of Change’, Indigenous people throughout history who have stood up for their rights and fought to bring about change.

One such person is Uncle Ossie Cruse MBE AM. He is the Pastor of the Aboriginal Evangelical Church in Eden, NSW, and a passionate activist for Indigenous people and human rights. In an interview with TEAR Australia, Uncle Ossie shared about his journey of faith and activism. ‘When I became a Christian, I became very sensitive to the injustice in the world, in general, and the injustice of things that took place in history. As we know, you can't reverse history. But you can learn from your mistakes and there is a way of making a better world for our children's children. That's what I've worked at for so long… Love must be the motivation of doing things. You must act because you love your country, love your people and you want to see the best for your children's children, because you love your children.’

Uncle Ossie’s story, along with reflections from other First Nations Christian leaders, can be found on the TEAR Australia website: https://www.tearfund.org.au/what-we-do/first-peoples/naidoc-2022. It's inspiring to see how these leaders have taken the call of Jesus to stand up for those in need and facing injustice.
