Term 3 is a very busy time for a number of year groups at the College.
Next week Year 12 will be commencing their trial examinations. This is an important step in their journey through to the HSC. Not only do the trials contribute towards their final assessment mark, but they also provide invaluable experience in sitting a full HSC examination in each of their courses.
As we are coming to their last assessment task in stage 6, I thought it would be valuable to again go over how the final HSC mark is calculated.
For Board Developed Courses, the final HSC mark (/100) is calculated from the school assessment mark (/50) + HSC examination mark (/50). The school assessment mark has been calculated using the weightings for each of the four assessment tasks in each of their courses.
Eg 1. School Assessment Mark /50
Assessment 1 = 20% which contributes 10% to the final HSC mark
Assessment 2 = 25% which contributes 12.5% to the final HSC mark
Assessment 3 = 25% which contributes 12.5% to the final HSC mark
Assessment 4 (Trial) = 30% which contributes 15% to the final HSC mark
Note: this mark /50 is moderated against every other school in the state for each course
2. Final HSC Examination Mark /50
This is a scaled mark that students have achieved in their final HSC examination for each subject. This mark contributes 50% to their final HSC mark.
For Board Endorsed Courses and Board Developed Category B Courses (without the optional exam)
Students will receive a A – E grade based on the weightings of their HSC school assessment tasks for each course studied. These grades are determined using the NESA course performance descriptors.
I would like to wish all our year 12 students the very best for their trial examinations.
Year 10 have just commenced the process to understand the rules and procedure when choosing subjects in stage 6. This is a confusing time for some students when interpreting NESA requirements, rules for attaining an ATAR, the number of different pathways available and suite of subjects they can choose from.
Marian has provided a number of information sessions and access to resources to help answer these questions and simplify the process. I would firstly like to thank all those students and parents who attended the Information Night on Thursday 28th July. The night not only provided students and parents with an explanation of the rules and procedures for the HSC and ATAR but also explained TVET and SBAT options for students as well as provide the opportunity for students and parents to speak with specialist teachers in the stage 6 courses along with two TAFE representatives.
