DSC goes Global

It has been an incredibly busy term for our International Student Program and two events showcasing our amazing College on a global platform!

Victorian Global Learning Awards

The annual Victorian Global Learning Awards (VGLA) celebrate international student excellence and recognise schools and homestay families for outstanding global learning and engagement. The awards are open to all current Victorian year 11 and 12 international school students, government and non-government schools and their homestay families. This year, which marks the 10 year anniversary of the VGLA, our College was nominated for two awards: Homestay Family of the Year and Global Citizenship Award.

On Friday 17 June, the award winners were announced at the official ceremony and it is with great pride that we communicate with our community that we won both categories!! We also came home with an additional award: International Student of the Year – Ambassador Award, which was awarded to Tien Hieu (Harry Bui), which is the highest accolade an International student can receive in Victoria.

Harry has kindly provided us with his acceptance speech for International Student of the Year.

Thank you, Parliamentary Secretary, for being here and presenting my award.
Good morning. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we are meeting on today, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. I pay my respects to their Elders past and present, and to emerging leaders. I extend that respect to all Elders and Aboriginal people here today.

I am very grateful to receive this award and to be honest, this award is not only for me but for everyone who has helped me so much throughout 2021.

First, I want to say thank you to all the award organisers, the Victorian Department of Education and Training especially the International Education Division, for organising such an amazing event where international student for the past 10 years are recognised and rewarded for not only our academic achievement but also our extra-curricular activities.

Secondly, I want to say thank you to all my teachers and staffs at Doncaster Secondary College. Thank you for being super supportive and lovely. I cannot find a better group of teachers anywhere. To Ms Huang and the Doncaster International Student Support Team, you are the best and I hope I have said that enough for you to know.

And most importantly, thanks to my family and friends who always stand by my side and support me all the way to here. I love you guys so much. Thanks mom and dad for giving me this opportunity to come to Victoria to study and I just want u guys to know, I have the best parents in the whole world. Shout out to my best friends, we got this together and I’m so sorry for being so annoying sometimes. Gosh, I just love everyone so much.

To all the award finalists and winners who are here today, I just want to say I’m highly impressed by your achievement and I wish you all the best for your study in the future.
As the International Student of the Year 2022, I just want to say to every international student who are here in Victoria or who are planning to come here, you have made and would make an amazing decision and I’m so proud of you.

Virtual School Familiarisation Tours

An exciting project has been quietly simmering away, behind the scenes, in the International Student department. Since May, Ms Sally Huang (our International Student Program Director) has been gathering our brightest International and local students to feature in a worldwide video launch - the Virtual School Familiarisation Tours, hosted by the Department of Education and partnered with Creativa.

The Virtual School Familiarisation tours were borne out of a need to showcase Victorian government schools to prospective overseas families in a Covid-19 world. Many countries still have closed international borders therefore ISP agents and marketers cannot freely travel to countries to inspect and promote schools. The Department of Education has therefore funded the creation of Virtual School Familiarisation Tours for schools with a well-developed and highly regarded International Student Program. Doncaster Secondary College is 1 of the 20 schools selected.

On Wednesday 22nd June, our College was showcased to a global audience of over 50 ISP agents and many more prospective overseas families. Our College's unique features and benefits, such as diverse curricular and co-curricular activities, student voice and leadership, and strong personalised wellbeing supports, was highlighted in a video. We will share this video with our community once it is released by Creativa

Congratulations to Ms Sally Huang for your hard work and dedication to presenting our school to the world!
