Peter Doherty

Science Awards

Recently Belinda Wehl, Eloise Alison and I attended the Peter Doherty Science Awards at the Ballarat Tech School as some of our amazing Year 9s had made it to the finals. Competing against 4 other teams who also made it to the finals from 3 different schools from Ballarat and surrounds, the girls represented BHS in a spectacular manner. They had the audience laughing and engaged throughout their presentation.

In what came down to a nail biting decision from the judges, our girls took out the WIN!

Students: Remee Simmons, Taryn Simmons, Kira Barbary  (pictured above)

Project: Would you be dryer by walking or running in the rain?

“The girls found that it was better to run rather than walk in the rain.  They went to a great deal of effort to run the experiment, in both controlled and natural rain!  I have attached the photo of their controlled rain setup below...pretty impressive.” - Belinda Wehl

The judges felt that their project was very relevant considering the distance Year 9 students at Ballarat High School walk from the ALC to any other area of the school, especially in ever sunny Ballarat! When asked whether they would be choosing to run or walk in the rain, Kira replied “I will just use an umbrella!”.

The girls have picked up $900 for themselves and $300 for the school’s science program, we are so proud of their amazing efforts.

This is the second year in a row that Ballarat High School students have taken out a prize at the Awards and we look forward to more projects from any interested Year 7 to 10 students in 2023!

Well done girls!!!
