IRC NEWS

In our new normal environment, the Information Resource Centre aims to continue to provide the services and run the activities as planned but in an online mode. Some of those online services and activities are as follows:

Access to Digital Curriculum Resources

The IRC has successfully negotiated with a range of suppliers to enable the school community to access databases and newspapers on any device 24/7 from offsite. Todate we are grateful to Infobase, Gale Group and Booklegger who have offered access to a large collection of databases and resources free of charge while the lock down continues.

Some of the databases and online resources that students can access are:

Students can go to the Nossal Staff & Students Team IRC Channel to access these databases.

Wide Reading Continuation

Wide reading at the beginning of every English class will continue in Years 9 and 10 during the lock down. Besides the many academic, social, cultural and cognitive benefits, reading a good book is also a great way of escape, particularly now when some students may be under a lot of stress and anxiety. In order to enable the students to access quality novels in an online environment the IRC is making arrangements for them to access an additional 1900 ebooks from Wheelers EPlatform.

Daily Newspapers

We have also made arrangements for senior students and staff to access the digital edition of “The Age” newspaper as well as its archives while offsite. Arrangements are being made for “The Age” access to other year levels as well while we are currently working to enable access to “Herald Sun” newspaper as well.

Visiting Authors

Two of the authors namely Serena Geddes and Kirsty Murray had to cancel their visits to our school towards the end of last term due to COVID-19. However we are currently making arrangements for the famous author Phillip Gwynne, (who is scheduled to visit our school on 19 May) to deliver his lecture to all our Year 11 students online through Teams.

Literature Circle

Our Literature Circle book discussion with students, staff and community members has been a very interesting co-curricular activity. We intend to continue this book club discussion online through Teams. We are planning our first online Literature Circle discussion for 28 April during lunch break.

Curriculum Based Displays

The IRC is planning to continue mounting curriculum based displays digitally. Some of the digital displays that will go up shortly include, “Endangered Species,” for Science “World War 2,” “Economics and Business” for Humanities and “Wide Reading” for English.
