Active April

This year, over 60 staff and students registered themselves with the NossalHS team, to partake in the Premier's Active April Challenge. The challenge encourages all Victorians to do 30 minutes of physical activity each day during April. Our team tracker at 21 April, suggests that our participants have accumulated over 16 hours on average in their first 3 weeks which is simply brilliant.  Some honorable mentions to go to Kieren Tirikawala (N8), Sai Kristam (S4), and Mr Delaney, who have completed 66, 34 and 35 hours respectively.

It's not too late to register yourself and enjoy the support from like-minded people, and various health benefits of leading a physically active lifestyle.  The 30 minutes of activity can be made up of any sort of physical activity, including incidental activity. You can accumulate your 30 minutes (or more) throughout the day by combining a few shorter sessions of activity of around 10 to 15 minutes each.  In total we have achieved over 1000 hours of exercise. If you have a Fitbit you can sync your device to make tracking your activity even easier!

Remote Learning from a student's perspective

Like all students, our School Captains have embraced the challenge of remote learning this term.  Here is their take on the situation.

"Nossal High School’s experience with digital learning has aided significantly in the smooth transition of learning to online school. Teachers have done an outstanding job coping with the extra demands of online learning while students have also done really well adapting to the current situation.

However, going into online school has been quite an unusual experience for most students, including myself. Although, learning within the comfort of my own home and having more time to myself is relaxing, I (like most other students), find managing this extra time quite challenging. It can be difficult to stay on-task and remain productive without being in a school environment. Accordingly, I strongly recommend that each student develops their own routine during isolation. A routine is extremely beneficial for staying organised, reducing stress and developing good habits. While staying productive during isolation is important, it is even more important to take care of ourselves. Whether this be going for a jog or staying connected to friends, remaining mentally and physically healthy is of paramount importance while at home. Ultimately, as a school community, lets remain optimistic and take each day as it comes."

"Going into Year 12, I was expecting a tough year. But undoubtedly, this was not quite what I had in mind.

The transition to online learning has been fairly smooth as we're in a lucky position as Nossalonians to have had experience with this, albeit in the short-term, over the last few years. Even the most technologically challenged teachers have now become proficient in the workings of Microsoft Teams. The longer sleep-ins have definitely been one of the highlights in the change to remote learning, with no longer the need to make the arduous public transport journey to Berwick. In the comfort of my own bedroom, I'm able to join all my classes and engage a bit differently with my teachers and peers. It's definitely tested my ability to regulate my own learning and strongly challenged my motivation with the unusual monotony of my new normal day. It has been tough to maintain a positive long-term outlook with all the uncertainty around us, but I fully believe in our ability as a cohort and as the wider Nossal community to persevere through this, whilst embracing the challenge."

"When we started this year, I would have believed that it was going to be an important year in my life, but definitely not one that would define modern history. The pandemic has caused one of the largest global economic recessions in history, led to the cancellation of sporting and cultural events, and induced worldwide shortages of everyday products, worsened by panic buying in a situation which frightens everyone. With education disrupted for nearly all Australian students, Nossal has demonstrated its forward thinking with concepts such as Digital Delivery Day, which have prepared us more than adequately for the current norm of online schooling. Though the novelty of online education, has since worn off, I personally think that I have adapted reasonably well to the radical changes. Late mornings and the luxury of staying in my pyjamas on a cold morning have been a hidden blessing in this new world of ours.

However, with screen time being an activity that consumes, now more than ever, a significant proportion of our day, we must take any opportunity to disrupt our sedentary behaviour, whether that be wandering around the backyard or doing some chores. As the world anxiously waits for this pandemic to pass, and for all of the afflicted to get better, all of the students, are waiting to get back to school, in a return to normalcy and life as we know it. So stay inside and take care of yourselves!"
