Real Life Applications of Mathematics

Year 7 Maths- Do you know the real rules of Uno?

Did you know the majority of Uno players do not play by the official Uno rules? Well you are probably in that majority. We surveyed the Year 7 students and discovered that only 7.69% played by the official rules. Most people have modified the game over time, adding in “stacks”, allowing people to put Draw 2’s on Draw 2’s, getting rid of challenges, nearly everyone also changed the way that you can win the game.

  • To win a game of Uno, a player must reach a total of 500 points.
  • After you have won a round you collect the points
  • To calculate points, you add up all of the cards from the losers and keep playing until someone reaches 500 points.

In Year 7, our project is about the official rules of and making our own rules for Uno. We started off by reviewing the official rules and playing by them. We have been developing skills about collecting data and probability. To finish off our project, we are creating our own rules and playing with the new rules we create.

Year 8 Maths- Around the World … and back: Planning a Holiday

In Year 8 Maths, we have been doing a project where we had to plan our dream holiday to our chosen country. To begin with we had to plan where we were going we also had to find tickets, accommodation, tours and activities. We used many maths skills such as measurement, distance, money conversions, percentages, time zones, percentage discounts, chance and working out cheaper options. For my holiday I’ve chosen to plan a trip to Dubai, I had to organise my flights, accommodation, transport, travel insurance and put it all into an itinerary. I really enjoyed this project because it was engaging and it helped me with life skills I need in the future.

In Year 8 Maths, we had to plan our dream holiday, to our chosen destination. We had to plan our destination and roll a dice to see how much money we had to spend, the budget. We also would roll the dice to get some random rewards or fees to be added into the cashflow at the end. We also started the project by completing some skills to do with time zone and currency conversions. For my holiday I had a budget of $20,000, I planned to take road trip to Brisbane then Sydney, the tours and activities I choose were Sydney and Brisbane zoo, Sydney opera house tour, Sydney sea life and the wheel of Brisbane.

Year 9 Maths- Game of Life Part 2: Life gets INTERESTing

In our project Game of Life: Part 2 Life gets INTERESTing which was a continuation of our Term 3 project which was investigating part time and full-time wages, taxation and budgeting. This term it was really good to learn about what life will be like after we leave school to managing a budget as an adult with adult financial situations and challenges. This project made us think about what our parents go through when managing finances. During this project we used a variety of maths skills including, collecting financial information, budgeting income after tax, simple interest when purchasing a car and compound interest when purchasing a house. After completing this project, I feel a lot more confident to be able to manage my money and budgeting as I get older.
