Year 5

Mini Makers Fair!

The ring of the bell, the turn of the door handle, the sound of the teacher taking the roll, the motor of the bus. We rumbled into the car park for the Whittlesea tech school. The school was holding a Makers fair and our school had been invited. We got out of the bus onto the pavement. Our teachers, Dylan, Amanda, Jennie and Laura divided us into two groups, 5C and D, 5A and B. We went inside and put our belongings down which contained our food. Then we started looking at the options provided for us on the first floor, Zone A. The options were, a bucket with a hole at the end with a balloon stretched across the opening with fog inside, their was also a station where we made oblique and slime, another station offered the alternative choice of making a bristle bot, made from a motor, a battery and the bristles, it moved around in circles.

In Zone B, there was the choice of writing secret messages with the wax of a candle and uncovering the message with metallic paints, flying a drone, learning about 3D printing and trying to solve 3D printed

puzzles, drawing a picture then adding a LED to make it light up in a particular place and dipping a piece of paper into a solution of water paints and oil, making an amazing artwork.

In Zone C, there was an arcade which had fun pack games of the original classic Packman and the air rising, air Hockey. Some feedback that was given was that the Packman joystick could be more flexible

and the air hockey scoring slot should be risen higher as to let the puck go in and not bounce off. There was also a circuit made from vegetables such as, Limes, Potatoes and oranges. They were connected by wires and nails that lit up an LED. Another option was to make a lava lamp which was run by our STEM captains, Jake and Jude, they instructed us to put food dye into oil and water then a tablet and watch the oil and water mix producing Carbon Dioxide making the solution have bubbles which want to rise. There was also a station where we drew on white bags and got to keep our bag illustrations. Another activity was making slime. Their was a challenge between our peers to make the best slime in the shortest amount of time.

The Mini Makers Fair was exceedingly fun! My classmates and I wished it was longer. The Mini Makers Fair be in my mind, a memory I will never forget.
