Performing Arts Captains Report

This semester in the Performing Arts department, MAD dance, who participated in Wakakirri, the Australian national Story-Dance festival for primary and Secondary schools, received nine awards including the most inspirational story and the people’s choice award. They also performed a piece for the Whittlesea Youth Commitment 20 Year Celebration. During this term MAD music students practiced and performed for Song, Dance and Drama Night where they were outstanding with their songs. The Performing Art classes have performed their works at Song, Dance and Drama Night successfully showing confidence and skill. Both MAD Music and Dance recently saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the musical. It was an enjoyable experience involving singing dancing and acting. Finally the preparations for 2020 production has begun, which will be based on the movie ‘Bring It On’. Students have auditioned and positions have been filled. Rehearsals will begin next year. This year has been a fantastically successful year for the Performing Arts and we have gained confidence and refined our skills. We have enjoyed being Performing Arts Captains very much and we’re looking forward to 2020.

Night Under the Stars

On Tuesday 19th November, students from the Early Years campus performed in our Night Under the Stars event.  All students from years Prep to 4 performed both a song and a dance.  The theme this year was ‘Evolution of Dance’.  Each year level performed in a style from a different era. There was even a time travel robot!  The evening was a wonderful opportunity not only for students to showcase their hard work but also for our school community to come together and celebrate the achievements of our students. Here are some recounts from the main characters:

‘Woo’ the parents and children were going crazy after the choir finished their songs. Patrick and Clare came on stage and said their speech, they walked off while Sierra Braeden, Karaz and I walked on. I felt a feeling like an ice cube had run down my spine. We walked for our first lines, the time traveling sound started and my legs went wobbly. I fell down and got back up and held onto Sierra, I fell again one last time and hurt my thumb. After all the wonderful students had finished their performances, we did our last speech. I walked off with a huge smile on my face ‘tonight was amazing’ I said to myself and I finished my drink and said my goodbyes and went home. On the way home I whispered to myself “That was great, I can’t wait until next year.”

The moment we walked on to the stage, I had a weird feeling, a feeling of accomplishment and leadership, and of course a little stressed and unsure, but that was to be expected. By the end of the concert I felt great and I felt as if I had confidence, equal to the one of a bull. And I felt a weird feeling, different to the one at the beginning of the performance, one which I would describe as a river filled with happiness that would now ever flow through this new achievement for the rest of my life. I was now content to the brim with a variety of different wonderful feelings. This had to be one of the biggest achievements of my life. Lead acting in a whole school event.

The spotlight was on me and my fellow peers.  We started doing our speaking.  This was one of the best days of my life, I was feeling as if I was made of joy. We called up the first grade, then after some more speaking, we called the second grade.  This continued until we had introduced every grade!  We then had our turn to sing and dance with the Year 4s.  Finally, we finished and I was so relieved.

Samantha, Braeden, Karez and I were standing in front of hundreds of people ready to talk.  The nerve was running by my body. “Look we found a time machine!” Let’s see where it will take us to next”.  Samantha said her line and we continued on.

My heart was pounding fast in my body like it was going to rip out into my hands.  Sam whispered into my ear “that was amazing but scary.”  We watched all the wonderful dances and we did our parts.  It was the best thing I have done in my life!

Song, Dance and Drama Night 2.0

On the 14th of November some students from the Middle Years Campus performed at the semester 2 Song, Dance and Drama Night. The showcase consisted of music, dance and drama acts put together by the students and teachers over the semester. The night was a big success and many people from the community came to support and cheer on their friends and family. The concert was a great way for the students and teachers to work together and create a sense of collaboration and teamwork at The Lakes.
