The purpose of the Provisions program at St Pius X College is to assist identified students in Years 5-12 who have learning and support needs, at their most stressful times in the school year – namely in tests, exams and during timed written in-class assessments. For details on what this student support involves, and how it is managed at our school, click below to see the overview.
The good news about the upcoming NAPLAN tests, scheduled for mid-May, is that the literacy and numeracy skills to be assessed are based on your son’s regular learning in the classroom, so this means there is no urgent need for ‘cramming’ or undue stress. However, mental preparation as well as familiarisation with NAPLAN layout and content are very useful in the lead-up to any testing situation, and NAPLAN is no different.
For this purpose, the national Curriculum Authority (ACARA) makes available to the public, example test papers and questions so that students can get a sense of the style, the ‘look and feel’ of the tests and understand what types of texts and questions may be given on the actual test day(s). They also provide practice questions and answers to correct them.
Follow this link with your son to access online NAPLAN papers for Years 5, 7 and 9, with questions and answers provided: https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/the-tests.
Parents can further assist their sons through encouraging them to be proactive in seeking out assistance from their classroom teachers on difficult questions or problems, and by taking advantage of co-curricular support services provided at the College, such as the After-School Study Program and Maths Drop-in Centre. These improvement opportunities are staffed by skilled teachers, who can provide additional instruction on NAPLAN-based resources, as needed, throughout the year.
Includes 2018 LSE contact points for parents and carers.
