Pi Day:   14th March 2018

Once again St Pius X College boys will be celebrating International Pi Day on Wednesday 14th March this year.  Of course students are keen to celebrate the number Pi (the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter) and also to earn a Garlo's pie or a mini pizza pie along the way. Boys win a pie if they can memorise the decimal expansion of Pi to 30 decimal places and recite it to Mr Garvey during next week. Also students may do a creative homage to Pi through an art work, poem or musical piece. The Maths staff are to be the judges of any entries.

Mr Couani is once again making a fantastic finish to the day by ringing the bell at 3:14, a memorable way for all boys to draw closer to the world’s greatest number.

The Edmund Rice Readers' Challenge

Academic and House Leaders united to share their enthusiasm for reading by promoting the Edmund Rice Readers’ Challenge to the Year 10 assembly.  On the benefits of reading the Academic Prefects said:

  • “Reading is a way to understand the world and your place in it.”  -  Oliver Stewart.
  • “It expands your vocabulary and is a source of creativity.” - Isaac Fong.
  • “It’s relaxing and a great way to manage stress.”  - Daniel Aposhian.

This year, with so many House Points on offer, House Prefects are keen for Year 10 students to read.

Barron House’s Thomas Courtney urged the Red Team “to see red and read” to keep them in the lead. Rice’s Darcy Gyzan’s review of Rice’s performance in past Swimming and Athletics Competitions roused Riceans to read while Purton’s Ryan Kelleher strategized thatpoints accumulation is crucial for the Purton Panthers to succeed”.

The Challenge ends 1st September, full details including the Frequent Reader Reward Scheme and recommended books are available at http://libguides.spx.nsw.edu.au/reading/ERRC
