Basketball

The Basketball Awards night will be held in the College Gym on Tuesday 20th March from 6:30pm. All players are expected to attend the ceremony.

Well done to all teams. I was very impressed with everyone’s efforts and the great sportsmanship displayed on Saturday. It was inevitable we would win some and lose some and all teams can hold their heads high regardless of the result. After five years the Firsts have won their way into a Grand Final. It will be a big test against reigning champions St Augustine’s.

Grand Finals: All games are at Penrith Basketball Stadium. All teams must provide one parent to do the score bench. Please offer to help on the bench.

Game of the day: Our own 13Es and 13Fs had to battle it out for a spot in the Grand Final. All the boys gave it their best, unfortunately there could only be one winner.

Play of the day: Lachlan Chue - 5ths. I don’t know what you call the move, but it went in for two points. Lachlan had a good day overall. Well done Lachlan.

Deserves a mention: All the boys who played deserve a mention. They represented St Pius X College with pride and good spirit. All those parents who stepped up and helped on the score benches deserve a mention as well.  Thank you for your support of the teams.

ISA Division 1 Semi-final – 1st XI v St Patrick’s College at Breen Oval Strathfield

The 1st XI faced rivals St Patrick’s at Breen Oval in the semi-final on Saturday. Batting first and sustaining the loss of two early wickets was followed by a devastating spell from the opposition captain left the 1st XI reeling.  Josh Rayner (20) and Louis Mosmann (12 not out) provided resistance but the damage had been done as the team was dismissed for 64 off 31 overs.

With 40 minutes until lunch, the St Patrick’s batsmen started aggressively in pursuit of the small target. Despite wickets to Mosmann and Liahm Williams, the total was reached quickly.

This was a disappointing end to a high achieving and enjoyable season. The 1st XI always played together as a team and appreciated the support of their loyal parents, Mr Couani and Mr Stearn on Saturday. They might have been well defeated in the semi-final but they won a lot of admirers throughout the season because of their hard work and spirit which never let them down.

NSTA Tennis

With over 13 St Pius X College teams playing from 8.00am and five Pius vs Pius games in the draw it was set to be an exciting morning. It is great to see how far our Junior teams have come in just a few short weeks.  On Court 2 we had our top two teams from Division 12 playing (Sid Rana, Ryan Horan and Jordan Papastamatis – Pius 30 vs Jack Morabito and Joseph Sorrentino – Pius 28) and it was a very exciting game with some great rallies. John Cantali and Alex Kurdoghlian also played well against Reddam 6 with some excellent line balls from all players. Toby Thornton-Bott and Isaac Elms fought hard against two Year 12 players from Redlands and although some great shots were played by the St Pius team, Redland came out victorious. Pius 22 (Will Robinson and Chris Mander) vs Pius 21 (Cameron Masters and Lucas Youngman) was yet another exciting match to watch, with a nail-biting tie-breaker which saw Pius 21 win with only one game between the two teams.

Thanks again to the senior boys for the assistance given as mentors/umpires for the Junior games:  Riad Lahoud, Victor Lahoud, Jared Lam, Kobe DuMoulin, Alessandro Muranty, Aidan Shearer-Hawkins and Alex Clelland.

Another 14 St Pius X College teams turned up to play at 10.00am and this included 6 Pius vs Pius games. One of the most exciting matches was the Pius 1 vs Pius 2 match. The Lahoud brothers dominated the game with some impressive shots and despite some stiff competition from Daniel Scipioni, Ben Casey and Declan Langreiter Pius 1 won the match. Thanks to Christian Harris (Pius 3) who stood in and played for the opposition.  He gave it his all in the match, even taking a big slide in the game which resulted in an injury that forced him to retire after the doubles. Despite the heat of the day, it was great to see such camaraderie amongst the Pius men throughout their matches.

Please note that it is important to make sure that all boys are present for all games each Saturday to support their team. We are now halfway through the season with the last games, finals and play-offs being held on 24th March. All boys will be involved in these games on this day so please note the date in your calendars.
