Year 9 Duke Of Edinburgh
Thirteen Year 9 students are currently in the process of completing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards. This is a globally recognised initiative which provides students with an opportunity to pursue activities they are interested in during their own time, whilst receiving support within school time to complete other aspects of the award.
The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award encompasses four areas:
1) Service (Community volunteering)
2) Skill (Learning something new and practicing
regularly e.g. a language or instrument)
4) Physical Recreation (participating in a regular
activity/exercise out of school)
An Adventurous Journey (School Camp)
Our students have participated in a range of different activities throughout Term 1, including:
Volunteering with the Pinkerton Landcare & Environment Group
- Completing land clearing tasks, weed removal, invasive species eradication and watering of seedlings at the Werribee River and Pinkerton Forest locations
Hiking at The Werribee Gorge
- Students completed a 10km loop walk at the stunning Werribee Gorge
Rock Climbing excursion
- Students received instruction at the Hard Rock Climbing Centre in the Melbourne CBD, and participated in a 2hr climbing session
These activities allowed students to visit a number of stunning and unique outdoor environments, working collaboratively to complete set tasks and goals. Their efforts, attitude and application has been commended by staff, and volunteers alike, and has allowed for the formation of strong community links and partnerships.
The next activity planned for the students is an overnight camp in Anglesea, including the completion of part of The Surf Coast Walk, and other adventure activities.
